Senior Performance Engineer Interview

Roswell, GA (US)

I applied online and the process took 3 months - interviewed at General Motors in March 2014.

Interview Details I applied twice online 100 days prior to my face-to-face interview. I received a call from a recruiter who set up a phone interview that lasted 1 hour. Then, I was called to the Roswell, GA "Innovation Center" for a video presentation, then back-to-back interviews.

I applied online and the process took 4 months - interviewed at General Motors.

Interview Details Was called in for an interview after applying for a job 2 months ago. Was told ahead of time about the format which was going to be incredibly formal with a series of pre-approved questions from HR for the first round. After this initial in person interview, it took another month before I received a phone call from someone in HR at a US based office. They informed me I was a finalist and verified some of my information. Yet another month later, was informed they were not pursuing my candidacy after all. Overall, the process was very confusing and time consuming - seems like there is a big disconnect between hiring departments.

Interview Question – All the questions were scenario based so be prepared with examples - however, the one that got me in particular was about a task that had failed or gone wrong and how it was dealt with. I gave an scenario that was team based and they specifically needed a personal failure. Not to toot my own horn but I struggled to give an example where I alone failed in a situation.   Answer Question

Research and Development Researcher Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate

I applied through college or university and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at General Motors in February 2014.

Interview Details Had a prescreening at a University career fair. That was followed up by a one-hour phone-interview from Michigan. Was contacted about 3 weeks later via email from HR.

Interview Question – Questions were very behavioral based. Examples: (1a)Tell me about a time when you had to learn something new. (1b) What did you learn from this experience. (2a) What did you do in your field to stay up to date. (2b) (2b) What did you learn from this experience. (3a) Tell me about a time when you had to meet an unexpected deadline. (3b) What did you do, how did you react, and what did you learn from this experience. They also asked me about my interests and the type of groups that I would like to work with at GM.   Answer Question

Interview Details First they emailed me stating that they want to talk to me, I gave them time. When they called me, all of sudden it was phone technical interview. They asked very very simple technical questions on phone interview. I was surprised as it was unexpected. I gave them phone interview anyway, and it was lasted 45 minutes. After 2 hours, they really liked in phone interview and they want to proceed with face to face. They scheduled day and time with me. During face to face interview, they asked 99% behavioral questions. I was surprised.

Operations Research Professional Interview

Warren, MI (US)

I applied through other source and the process took 3 months - interviewed at General Motors.

Interview Details I applied through the INFORMS Career website. I was first interviewed by two Operations Research Directors and then I had an HR phone interview asking HR-related questions. Then there was a full day on-site interview, and that included 2 STAR interviews, technical interview, seminar. In the STAR interviews, I got two choose one from two questions for every question. Each STAR interview was about 1 hour. The technical seminar/presentation had a lot of questions.

Interview Question – Some STAR questions are difficult to answer unless prepared in advance.   View Answer

Senior Financial Analyst Interview

Senior Financial Analyst

Interviewed at General Motors

Interview Details HR is highly unorganized - no clear communication on interview times and whether or not there was to be an interview. The process on the day itself was very systematic and the people I met were very nice and professional. Also, throughout the process no one I met could tell me exactly which role I was recruiting for.

Interview Question – Nothing particularly difficult - standard finance technical questions.   Answer Question

Industrial Engineer - Entry Level Position Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate
Wentzville, MO (US)

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 1+ week - interviewed at General Motors in January 2014.

Interview Details The Entry Level Industrial Engineer position that I applied for was contracted out by an Engineering Temp Service. The best pro about this interview was how quick the entire process worked. I was approved for an interview on Friday, had the interview on Tuesday, and told that I would know by Wednesday if I could start the job next week. Everything else about the interview was incredibly tough. It was a panel interview with 4 engineering managers that had not glanced at my resume prior to our meeting. If they had, they probably wouldn't have agreed to interview me because I was clearly not the ideal candidate for the job. All of their questions were formed from the content on my resume. Since they had not had a chance to read my resume, most of their questions were taken out of context. For example, since I just graduated with my bachelors degree, all of my Industrial Engineering experience has been through Internships; however they were asking me for examples of my work that would be expected from an engineer with two to three years of experience. At the part of the interview that I was able to ask questions, every inquiry was answered with a pompous response. Altogether, my experience could have been better had my preparation been better.

Interview Question – "What is your opinion on the American Auto Industry?"   Answer Question

She told me that she will schedule interview with hiring manager. After a week call from hiring manager - 1 hr interview - All situational questions - He was writing everything you are saying. After 3 weeks call for face to face interview in Atlanta office - Interview with two hiring manger and written technical test. He told me written technical test is something new they have introduced recently.

No correspondence since then. Waiting for Yay or Nay.

Interview Question – Interview questions are all behavioral.
Like things you didn't like about your ex-manager, why
Describe project that you didn't want to work in but you have to and how did you cope
Describe most challenging project you have worked for

I was surprised there was no technical interview for this position even though hiring manager told me that job requires 70% coding and 30% team leadership.
