Interesting place for short term work. Don't expect long-term stability.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Cambridge, East of England, England

ProsGreat colleagues, and collegial environment. Interesting product portfolio. Location is good.

ConsThere is a large disconnect between executive management & real issues in workforce.
The Workplace is under-resourced for the set objectives in all departments. The company has experienced annual redundancies (7 years running) & struggles for profitability. The lack of financial stability leads to limited growth & development opportunities. Annual Salary adjustments do not keep up with inflation. Human resources management is quite poor.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop more open & receptive communication with workforce. Work on focused strategy & reasonable objectives for work force.

Politics, no appreciation for long term customers, killing most important product lines

Manager (Former Employee) San Ramon, CA (US)

ProsGood place for people who can handle changes in direction on a regular basis and know how to handle politics.

ConsCompany is wrought with politics. They only care about M&A's and positioning themselves to be sold. They don't appreciate long-term employees and are not thinking of products that customers rely on heavily. They think that R&D employees are easily replaced instead of recognizing the complexity of work experience the products require.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure people in headquarters work with people in remote offices and that they don't ignore or sabotage them. Stop promoting people who are not respected by your employees. Don't forget your Cheminformatics baseline.

    Nice & Friendly Environment

Senior Systems Engineer (Former Employee) San Ramon, CA (US)

    Pros1.Smart professionals.
    2. Friendly work environment.
    3. Happy Hour on Thursday
    4. Lots of projects to work on.
    5. Provide training
    6. Flexible hours

It's a great place to work on new projects. Management will support training to deploy new technologies. Everyone works hard and have been there for years.

    Cons1. Work long hours.
    2. Team gets consolidated to smaller group yearly.
    3. Outsource work to India.

If you like a fast pace environment, heavy workload, with little rewards; this is a place to be. Here you'll learn how to manage your time.

Growth via M&A has some benefits but also some downsides

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Diego, CA (US)

ProsGood products with a heavy emphasis on the science. Used to have less focus on software engineering but this is now improving year-on-year. Engineers and scientists do what is needed to get the product out, on-time with quality. Growth via M&A.

ConsOrganic growth is limited and so mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are always at the forefront. Integration of new technology into Accelrys stack not optimal. Legacy products linger. Seems to take a long time to effect change.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management domain knowledge could be better. Company vision not always clear.

Not sure it's going the right direction.

    Director (Current Employee)

ProsA lot of smart and dedicated people; bold vision and decisive strategies.

ConsIt has grown too big too fast without proper integration. A lot of waste and sloppy work; not much attention to details. Management doesn't (have time to) pay much attention to employee morale.

Advice to Senior ManagementPeople and quality work are the key to success in the long run.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Milford, MA (US)

ProsOur company got acquired by Accelrys

ConsLacks in motivating people to be more than 9-5 employees

Good place to work, needs better direction

Director, Customer Support (Former Employee) San Diego, CA (US)

ProsAccelrys is a scientific software company with a powerful platform, a fairly diverse application stack, and a lot of talented employees. It's still a pretty good place to work but things have changed (some would say for the worse) in recent years as the company struggles to grow to the next level, become a player in the enterprise arena, and invent the field of scientific business intelligence - a term created by Accelrys execs to describe the business area that they believe they dominate.

ConsThe recent emphasis on electronic lab notebooks, enterprise software, and processes have diverted resources, reduced efficiencies, and lowered morale in several areas of the company. The quality of the software is reduced when seasoned and skilled developers are treated as interchangeable, plug-and-play bit coders and development schedules are increasingly driven by the calendar rather than by quality. Recent mergers and exec turnover have diluted / muddled corporate culture and values

    Good place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExcellent work environment. Close knit community of scientists within the company and very helpful.

ConsBetter compensation is required. The pay-raise is in not commensurate with the increasing job responsibilities and experience.

Great if you love science and nice people, but not great if your a Tech Happy person.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) San Diego, CA (US)

ProsLots of great customers with a global footprint
    Stable and a money maker
    Not a cut throat environment
Growing both organically and through M/A.

ConsToo much of a focus on Science and not enough in other areas.
Slow to take up new technologies internally and within products.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe better listeners and follow up on feedback. Provide more career guidance and opportunities to those looking to move up in their career versus waiting for them to leave.

Stress and ever-changing direction by management-not a good place to work.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Diego, CA (US)

ProsCompany has great product and will be a leader in its industry soon. Employees are team-spirited and fun to work with. Management was flexible if employees needed personal time off. HR provided good moral events.

ConsHigh turnover, especially in management. Company keeps changing its direction which makes it difficult for employees to adjust to all the changes and diffficult for new officers to transition into the company's culture and objectives.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more open with employees. Don't just pitch how well the company is doing on the financial side and then layoff employees.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
