    Pros

the people in general were great; products cutting edge, good work life balance.

    Cons

the management don't seem to be able to understand when and where to invest in their business. They sold off so many business in the Telecoms area when really they just needed better management and more support. Could have really dominated in that region with better management.

    Pros

Fun projects, excellent cross-functional teams, experienced work force and constant innovation. Excellent internal training programs. Very fair layoff packages.

    Cons

A bit brutalist when they shut down a product line, not a lot of time to find work internally before the layoff takes effect.

I have been working at Agilent Technologies full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Agilent's company culture still has remnants of the old HP, where employees are respected, and many managers open to advice and concerns. Management tries to do the right thing, and work/life balance is respected. Co-workers are smart and friendly.

    Cons

HR is very old fashioned. Promotions dishearteningly rare, salaries below average and stagnant. Relative ranking system devalues most employees, rewards manager favorites rather than rewarding results, promotes competition rather than cooperation, and leaves most employees feeling bitter and demoralized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Agilent is a biotech company now, rather than an engineering company, and needs to change its mindset. Upper management needs to hire more executives with real biotech experience and with vision to grow the company. Salaries need to get more inline with Silicon Valley biotech salaries.

    I worked at Agilent Technologies

    Pros

Good benefits, competitive salary, bonus and reward system, plays by the rules as far as I know. Has an ethical culture at the worker level meaning that they treat full time professionals humanely (I can't vouch for contract workers). Lower level managers I have had have been competent and even likeable.

    Cons

Gradually moving away from the benevolent model to become more like other corporations. Replacing older experienced and expensive older workers with cheap talent without an appreciation of the long term consequences. Focused on the stock analysts and the quarter, blah, blah. It is hard to be a real star at the contributor level. The company is just too big.
