I worked at Amazon.com full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

If work is the most important thing to you right now, Amazon UK is a good place to do it. Incredibly fast pace of growth means a large amount of varied and interesting projects to take responsibility in with equally driven people. However you'll be expected to juggle this alongside your day-to-day role with no impact on your category deliverables, hence the need to be able to absolutely dedicate yourself to the job if you want to get anywhere and not have a breakdown. You will give up plenty of evenings and weekends if you intend to be there for a few years.

Promotion can be achieved but you need to be political - identify tools or fixes that will improve most categories, figure out a scalable way to deliver them and start shouting about them. Peer reviews and cross-category influence are key to progression whatever level you're at. True of every company to an extent, but you'll quickly see how Amazon takes that and everything else to the nth degree.

    Cons

The demanding environment combined with the relative rarity of promotions means that many level 6 and 7 managers are hired from outside the company rather than being promoted from within. The effect of this limits continuity planning and actually attracts some very average managers, because Amazon isn't like most workplaces. If you end up with a one of the poorer managers, you're going to struggle. Make sure you speak to/meet your prospective manager before agreeing to join a category.

Very metric driven company, sometimes to the point where it becomes irrational. Many opportunities within the company.

I have been working at Amazon.com as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

    Good on the CV
    Become comfortable with data
The experience is what you make of it, you can do as much work out of your remit as you want

    Cons

    Can be too metrics driven
    Can be overworked
Very frugal company, will hire as little people as possible meaning workload can be unmanageable.

I worked at Amazon.com full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fast pace, leading company in the field. Fantastic focus on customers. Good opportunities for promotion due to company's rapid expansion.

    Cons

No training so you're expected to learn everything yourself as you go along. Expect you to dedicate your life to the company with total obsession. Most fulfilment centres are in the middle of nowhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase your attention span - as soon as one project is announced and partially started the focus goes on to the next big thing without ever having finished the first.

I worked at Amazon.com full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Package: good salary, RSUs
    - I learned a lot
    - Looks good on your CV (very selective & successful)
    - Brand awareness (clients)

    Cons

    - Poor management: ex Boston Consulting Group mainly, they don't care about their staff nor HR
    - Extremely political: directors and category leaders use deep dives, financial reviews (operational plan), pricing reviews and backgrounds check (business school, consulting) to promote or to get rid off employees
    - Data centric / mental: analysing spikes or drops in base points even when it's not relevant (just a couple of units sold, or analysing sales over a couple of hours only on a very specific day: WoW and YoY!)
    - Workload: up to 60 hours per week, including Sundays (the data is processed on Saturdays so you receive business reports on Sunday morning and questions from the management on Sundays afternoon / evening)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It works, so not sure why they should change anything. It's just horrible for most employees / high turnover the first 2 years.

I have been working at Amazon.com full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great learning opportunities. They prefer to recruit internally, so once you're in, it is possible to take your career to the next step. Virtually everyone you come across outside of work is an Amazon customer, usually a happy one - it is true that the level of customer service is something to feel proud of.

    Cons

Absolute lack of transparency from Management, and very, very corporate environment - you've got to be ready to say you've got 'Amazon DNA'. As mentioned in the title, frugality is one of their core values, and it is one that applies to employees at all level. Salaries aren't amazing, and there are very few perks. In the team I worked with the turnover was very high, which was worrying.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retain your skilled staff! And be generous, at least a little.

Former Employee - Cs MANAGER  in  Edinburgh, Scotland
Former Employee - Cs MANAGER in Edinburgh, Scotland

I worked at Amazon.com full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Get to work with some real smart and focused people that you can learn from. Great opportunity if you work hard. Opportunity to travel if you work hard and are in a role where travel may be needed. Proud to work for such an innovative company.

    Cons

Too political and management play favourites. If you are "in" with the "in crowd" then you will be looked after. Senior management don't know what is happening in the front line, they think they do but are too far away from what people think. Year over year AIS and/or Pulse survey bring up the same failings but work done to fix issues is never fully implemented, this becomes frustrating and demoralising. Lack of or insufficient training in all roles I was invovled in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reach out to the leads and managers if you are looking to improve the CSA experience, engage them fully throughout processes and any change. Communicate everything better and be more transparent. Do not tolerate favouritism and cliques.
