Money's no good.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Valencia, CA (US)

I worked at AutoNation full-time for more than a year

ProsYou get to drive nice cars, dress nice, always meet new people & sell cars. Learn a good amount about the cars you sell.

ConsPay system is horrible. They don't pay you what you deserve. Benefits are a joke. The Chevy dealer in Valencia always gave away all the profit in a car just to make a deal so we as salesman wouldn't make enough to hardly survive.

Advice to Senior ManagementPull your heads out! Create a pay system that actually benefits your employees.

They only want "yes managers"

Auto Parts Consultant (Current Employee)
Fort Lauderdale, FL (US)

I have been working at AutoNation full-time for more than 10 years

Prospeople are great to work with

ConsHave made less every year for the past 5 years, They will rearange your pay so you make less. Even though they say they are giving you a raise. Management is not allowed to disagree with corporate even if the idea is not good.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow for disagreement on ideas that came from corporate. Accept ideas from the "rank and file".

Salespeople are replaceable.

Sales (Former Employee)
North Canton, OH (US)

I worked at AutoNation full-time for more than a year

ProsIf you know your inventory and can be strong and hold gross in the deal you can make some money,

ConsChange the pay plan to screw the salespeople (even more.) Log your commission on your own and keep an eye on it. They will skim cash off of it for anything they can think of. We were given spiffs on aftersale products but were always paid late for it. Almost like they want you to beg for it.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe car business is one where managers are often promoted based on factors other than the fact that they might be a good manager of people. Hire qualified people and treat them better than dirt.

AutoNation: Shared Service Center - Too many politics, very outdated.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at AutoNation

ProsThe Shared Service Center is in a prime location of the DFW area; easy access and very nice area to work in.

ConsThe politics of the management staff prevent progress from being accomplished in this office. The technology is outdated and numerous upgrades are needed but the knowledge is not there. The work ethic is very poor and the quality of the work staff is below average. The pay is relatively low and the culture of this office is ridiculous.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe Shared Service Center needs a complete overhaul. A full audit needs to be done to honestly reveal how much damage this office is causing to the overall goal and mission of this company. Structure needs to be put into place and the staff needs evaluation, especially the current management team. If not, I would not be surprised to see this office closed within the next 4 years.

Horribly run company

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Dallas, TX (US)

I worked at AutoNation full-time for less than a year

ProsThere are no pros about this company that can be given. Not a company I could ever recommend to anyone.

ConsPoor leadership, add on continually job responsibilities without additional compensation and in some cases no training. Poor compensation and benefits as well.

The most depressing place to work.

Auto Technician (Former Employee)
Pembroke Pines, FL (US)

I worked at AutoNation full-time for less than a year

ProsBesides the miserable work environment, there's actually some nice guys there.

ConsThey expect you to work 7-7 busy or not on a flat rate pay scale. Management is disconnected. The turnover rate is pathetic, morale is low, almost every person there is miserable. My supervisor didn't even speak fluent English. You're expected to be there every Saturday and Sunday 7-5/7-3. No money, this is a greedy selfish company. My advice is to get a job at a small family shop or dealership where you're appreciated, not this corporate abomination.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep sitting in your comfy air conditioned office while the company erodes beneath you. You're all a joke.

Should be AutoMation

GSM (Former Employee)
Richardson, TX (US)

I worked at AutoNation full-time for more than a year

ProsVery solid training in all departments but there is no allowances for deviation based on the human factor as it is a retail environment and is based greatly on human interaction.

ConsAbsolute disconnect between HR/corporate management and the employees. It is not uncommon for employee emails to HR/corporate to go completely unreturned.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit wasting your most valuable asset which is human capital
