Decent Job, Nothing Long-Term

Rental Sales Agent (Current Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at Avis Budget Group full-time for less than a year

ProsManagement and co-workers are great in helping you to learn the job; whether it's the computer system, selling skills, customer service, etc.

It's fun to be able to get to know and be able to drive a lot of new cars.

The job is varied in responsibility and even if you're at the rental counter, you get to experience various work aspects of the organization. Thus, you do learn a lot about the entire organization and the business of car rentals, in general.

ConsAs a Rental Sales Agent at the counter, renting cars out to customers, you work with a lot of individuals that certainly do not contribute to your personal development. Half of the non-management staff are older people, dedicated to their jobs, but stagnated in their role with no career prospects (otherwise, they would have moved up or left). The other half are immature teenagers (or in their early 20s) who basically see the job as nothing more than a part-time job, flipping cars instead of burgers. At least the older types take responsibility in their role, but you can't expect the same of the young ones. Thus, don't expect most people to do more than the minimum.

The pay is low, even with the additional commission. The commission isn't easy to get, either, unless you're into pestering people for the "upsell". The job of Rental Sales Agent is one step up from a used car salesman.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf Avis wants to truly be known for good customer service, get rid of the commission structure for Rental Sales Agents. The commission only encourages people to focus all their effort on getting that "upsell" and no effort on any other important aspect of the job. Higher overall pay without a commission, and a focus on customer service, would do well for the company.

The job of Rover (the personal responsible for checking-in cars when they are returned) is probably the hardest and most important job in the company. People are usually happy when they are getting their cars... but when they return their cars, if there was a problem, or there was damage, or they didn't get the car they wanted, or whatever... they become really crabby. It is at this point in their relationship with Avis that customer service is of the utmost importance. And how do you expect an employee that barely makes less than a waiter to want to give a good final impression to the customer?

Moreover, why are the Rental Sales Agents more highly rewarded than the Rover, when it is the latter's customer service that will either make or break a particular customer's relationship with Avis?

Enjoyed my time at ABG, but the new North American SLT is more concerned with appearances than results.

Director (Former Employee)
Parsippany, NJ (US)

I worked at Avis Budget Group full-time for more than 8 years

ProsFun job, great people. CEO Ron Nelson is a rock star who has led the company incredibly well and made genius acquisitions.

ConsThe political environment in the North American group is unbelievable, Pres decides if he likes you or not and they boys take it from there.

Advice to Senior ManagementDitch the emphasis on politics and measure the individual, not how much they appear to agree with you.
