Various roles: Great company to work for. Real chance of progression.

    Various (Former Employee) Bexleyheath, England

    ProsFantastic company to work for!
Real progression opportunities and great way to start a career!
If it hadn't been for me starting at the bank 4 years ago I wouldn't be where I am today (Mortgage consultant)

ConsChallenging but very worthwhile, depending on your role some more training would be useful...
Target driven environment has been disposed of which is a bit of a shame, now the targets are on the backburner....

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember that you started somewhere once and sometimes someone not hitting target isn't their fault.

The Most Innovative Retail Bank evolving into the true force for good for Customers and their local Communities.

Personal Banker (Current Employee) London, England

ProsPhenomenal Positive Change that will change the face of UK Retail Banking is taking place within Barclays Bank and it is definitely on the right track to become the most customer focused high street bank with the community spirit at its heart. Anthony Jenkins' vision for the brand is the right vision and should be mirrored by the rest of the high street banks.

ConsI only wish some of the changes they are implementing within retail banking were implemented long before the recent crisis within the British banking system.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue with the progressive change whilst acknowledging and rewarding the genuinely customer focused contribution made by staff within the branch network.

Summer Intern - Client Coverage (Corporate Bank)

Client Coverage Intern (Current Employee) London, England

ProsGreat culture: Everyone is very willing to help and network with you. The projects I have been asked to do are both interesting and, I believe, of relative value to the firm. You aren't just asked to menial work, the opportunity to learn certainly exists. Though I will caveat that by saying the internship is what you make of it. If you are willing to ask for more challenging work, it will come.

The work-life balance is very good. If you are interested in getting into banking but at the same time are concerned about early starts and late nights, the corporate side may be for you. Its much more of a "stay if you need to" type atmosphere; you'll be expected to do the work to a high quality, but provided that you are doing so, you have relative autonomy over the hours that you need to spend in the office. Though as an intern it would be advisable not to get in at nine and leave at five every day.

The full time staff are also of a very high quality, and its possible to learn a lot from them

In my experience the culture change at Barclays is not just lip service. The staff here take it very seriously and are committed to changing the perception of Barclays, but also are actively motivated to undertake charitable commitments.

ConsThe salary is not great (internship and grad scheme); it seems to pay below market rates.

From what I understand the four areas of Barclays are still very sectioned. It doesn't seem like there is a lot of opportunity to move to other areas of the bank (investment/wealth/retail). Definitely not on the graduate scheme, though it seems rare in wider employment also.

Great place to work, good benefits

Change Manager (Current Employee) Northampton, England

ProsGood teamwork and career development. Flexible working and high holiday allowance. Benefits package very generous - pension, share scheme, medical cover

ConsYou can be expected to work long hours and over the weekend for no acknowledgement. There is still a culture that it is who you know which makes a difference rather than what you do.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider that some team members may be doing a great job - they just don't boast about it like some

Excellent, on a school leavers programme where I am both working full-time and attend university study blocks

    Cashier (Current Employee) London, England

ProsGreat company to work for, fitted in. Friendly, helpful colleagues that do everything they can to help you progress.

ConsTravelling to London is costly and very time consuming, however the job itself is good.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo carry on with positive feedback and constructive criticism
