I worked at Ciena full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent salaries and benefits. Some smart people. Pretty buildings.

    Cons

Company can't get to the next level. Struggles to break even each quarter. Very political. Weak, outdated, inconsistent management styles. Consistently penny-wise and pound-foolish. Run like a 50s era company despite a lot of happy talk. RIFs and layoffs poorly managed. Fear and discontent ripple throughout beat up staffs "happy" to be employed. Infrastructure not kept up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be cheap. Hire a COO. Walk the walk, management. Stop the rampant cronyism and nepotism. Building for the future means sometimes not hitting your numbers for a couple of quarters.

I have been working at Ciena full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a good place to work and learn about the telecom industry. It is a working hours flexible company. Environment is amicable and has good benefits.

    Cons

Very fragmented, silos of power are noticeable and not much team work among different departments. Mid management is old with long tenure. That makes them outdated and very difficult to implement new ideas and methodologies, leading to inefficiencies.
