I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The pay is pretty good. There are some good people. Educational benefits as long as you go to one of EDMC's schools.

    Cons

Corporate culture, uncaring management, some people work hard to make you look bad in an attempt to make themselves look good. A great deal of corporate politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    Speedy hiring and onboarding process

    Cons

recognition program not in place/communicated across all departments
    poor employee morale
    hi-turn over rate
    no employee engagement
    lack of communication between teams/departments
some executive level leadership did not demonstrate professionalism
    inconsistencies in management
all levels of staff are overworked not leaving time for streamlining processes and procedures for effiiciency

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put employees first and value the students you serve. Your employees are on the front lines servicing the schools, students, and faculty you serve. Having worked for other organizations who make an effort to show their employees they are appreciated, it was an eye-opening experience to work for an employer who does not. The negative energy throughout the organization could be sensed in several departments (not just the CENTER, where I worked). I would caution anyone before seeking employment with Education Management Corporation.

    Pros

A place to go in the morning! Thats about it! There are frequent layoffs so the idea of getting a package and moving on is a nice perk.

    Cons

The opportunity for growth for a working professional is unheard of here. Its a bait and switch from the first meeting with HR. They tell you about growth opportunities but the real deal is if your not in the Pittsburgh or phoenix Kool aid club of popularity lets hang out at the local bar: it wont happen!
This is just a social club and not meant for serious management and educated professionals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work ethically within the government regulations to reduce the lawsuits so we can be trusted as working professionals in education.

I worked at Education Management Corporation

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, HR works with you regarding issues, training will help in future positions, some management is excellent at their job and work to help you succeed.

    Cons

Upper management promotes change frequently. Company is beingi nvestigated by Department of Education and has lost credibility. The programs are expensive and few students have success matriculating. Representative talk about changing students lives but are actually increasing their debt and career services only helps to find low paying jobs for graduates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follw business ethics and don't have people that are in relationships reporting to each other. this company is about sleeping your way to the top.

I worked at Education Management Corporation

    Pros

Used to be pay but now it is structured and not negotiable

    Cons

People harping on you daily. No ability to express any opinions. More worried about what Goldman Sachs thinks than anyone else since they own 40% of the company stocks. Employees are numbers- regardless of contributions made over any period of time. Do not listen to any review on here but the completely negative. After many years there I was poached due to my pay when I more than hit my numbers.

    Pros

Not much. You'll learn a lot about sales and how to overcome typical excuses from students. You also learn a lot about the education business.

    Cons

Ethics are sketchy at best. It's all about numbers and talking students into certain programs. It's more of a telemarketing and high pressure sales job than anything. To make numbers, management pressures you to put students who are destined to fail then owe a bunch of loan money into college anyway. There's a huge gap between admissions and academics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You've forgotten that graduation rates and students being successful matters. It's about more than just numbers and the pressure to perform guarantees our bad reputation will stick around.

    Pros

Its a check. Every now and then you have a good student experience that restores hope.

    Cons

Management local and senior are unresponsive. No collaboration. Work hard and find students.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to care. It shows you don't.

This used to be a very good college for subjects not generally offered at traditional colleges; however since the Gainful Employment legislations, its excellence has diminished and its reputation quite low.

    Pros

The students and most of my fellow colleagues!

    Cons

Poor Management, duplicitous tactics in management, dubious Financial planning for students; curriculum not cutting edge or on par with Industry Standards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Walk in the shoes of those below you, clean out from the TOP, not the bottom, eliminate the masculine dominance in upper Management. Redesign the identity of the College and end the age discrimination in Admissions.

    Pros

Office complex in downtown Pittsburgh is modern and well maintained.

    Cons

Too many to list. Despite what they tell new hires, EDMC cares about nothing but profit. They treat their employees like cattle and their students even worse. Employees in admissions are routinely told to pressure prospective students into applying for school even if they are clearly unqualified. Then, they are given a high-pressure sales pitch to accept extensive financial aid for a sub-par education that usually exceeds $50,000. This company is devious, ruthless and a borderline scam. Avoid them at all costs! The schools they represent are often legitimate, but EDMC is nothing short of a snake-oil salesman hawking online pipe dreams that rarely if ever satisfy students aspirations or even governmental standards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

None. There is really nothing to say to people who engage in such unethical business practices while treating their employees like expendable, and not particularly valued assets.

I worked at Education Management Corporation full-time

    Pros

If you're an executive you don't have anything to worry about. Pay is great and you have pretty decent job security (if you're at that level). Other than that, there aren't really pro's. The people are nice for the most part.

    Cons

No job security. Not compensated fairly for work, I did not receive a raise for 2 years, know of others who have not received a raise or promotion in 3 years or more. Company does not care about the students, no matter what they say. It's a business, business is about money, not about students. 401K was cut, so that is not even a benefit anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pack it in. Unless you change something quick, the ship is sinking. Priorities need to shift toward the employees more. While the business aspect is crucial, it's tough to run a business without employees.
