    Pros

Gilt is a young, energetic company (or at least was) the push toward an IPO has seen a dramatic reduction in the party atmosphere many had grown accustomed to. The company also has a great sabbatical benefit for employees that have been with the company for more than three years. However, with the high turnover, most of the employees that have taken advantage of that perk were around in the early years of the company's inception. The discount is great, but, sadly, not like it used to be.

    Cons

Long hours. If you're one that seeks adoration and acknowledgment for your ideas and accomplishments don't look here. Managers typically take credit for your ideas. Without shame, to boot!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is a worthless box as there is no advice management is truly willing to listen to. Culture surveys are conducted to "take the pulse" of the company which is a waste of time, because when the results come out nearly half of the participants will have been let go or will have just decided to quit. Also, the cronyism is quite rampant which makes management reluctant to change.

Gilt is great because I love the people I work with and the office is casual.

    Pros

Work with some amazing people. Work/ Life balance is pretty good.

    Cons

Compensation is on the low end. They tend to underpay but still try to squeeze every hour from you. Promotions are at the whim of fickle managers, who promise things but do not follow through. HR is not very responsive or helpful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to make people work more, at least offer them more pay, instead of trying to strong arm them

    Pros

Gilt has a great work life balance. There are unlimited vacation days. You can usually work an 8 hour day. The office space is modern and open. Lots of really smart people work there.

    Cons

It's not a super inspiring place to work. Priorities tend to shift often. There has been a good deal of turnover. It's not your dream job, but it's a decent place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Former Employee - Sales and Events Intern

    Pros

Flexible schedule, you can leave when you are finished with your work, awesome discounts on the Gilt sites, you can attend the events after you set them up

    Cons

Seems like they have interns doing a lot of busy work. Rarely did I ever see the research I did turn into anything else. Wasn't a huge help with getting a job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more direction and use interns as valuable resources. We are there to work so take advantage of it.

    Pros

The people you meet here are great & you will learn a lot. It seems that experiences and opinions vary depending on the department you work for. Overall, a good experience. The company has nothing but good intentions - it just has become more corporate and less about the individuals.

    Cons

The company has changed a lot recently. In general things move very fast at Gilt - which can be frustrating when things are just done to be done and without much thought.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to HR & to your employees.

    Pros

Decent pay, smart co-workers, good challenges

    Cons

Very obvious issues brought up many times in surveys throughout the company, very slow to actually address: management needs to decide on a specific direction and actually strive for it. Lack of room for advancement. Probably because of teams being cut back instead of growing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take opinions from surveys seriously. Provide a better opportunity for advancement.

A lot of good and potential struggling under lack of vision

Former Employee - Director  in  New York, NY (US)
Former Employee - Director in New York, NY (US)

    Pros

The company has a great start-up, entrepreneurial energy which is inspiring and invariably forces you to learn and adapt quickly. The name alone is great for the resume and provides a crash course on all things e-commerce. Good employee discounts and good pay which inevitably went back to company when shopping.

    Cons

Very little to no structure or vision. There is a stated matrix-like structure but in reality it almost feels like a fend for yourself structure. Senior management was often absent but there when things went really wrong, often much after the fact. Hard to develop long-range plans, goals when there was very little agreement or direction. At the end of the day it made the work difficult as you were always managing fire-drills as opposed to building something. Culture did not promote any work-life balance (in name only) which is fine if you're under 30. The organization as a whole has a lot of smart people but more people who think they are very smart and ultimately it created a delusional sense of greatness with little innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time in the office, craft a clear vision/direction and reward innovation (even failed) and hire non traditionally to inspire creativity and mentor junior staff.

Former Employee - Manager in New York, NY (US)

    Pros

Gilt is a great place to meet people that are going places. Almost everyone you work with has that "spark", where you can just tell that they are going to have a very successful career.

    Cons

Really long hours and a lot of pressure, without a clear pathway to promotion/higher salary. To some degree, a lot of people there think that their priorities should be everyone's priorities, so it can be difficult to manage the pressure from competing projects

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The structure of the departments need to be organized in a way that allows for clear delegation of projects/responsibilities. In large measure, a lot of different roles are working on the same tasks without a clear sense of ownership.
