    Pros

Can be a light and fun environment when it suits them

    Cons

This is an old company, departments dont talk and change is very difficult to implement.
Out of all the supermarket chains I think this one will fade away.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sack the lot of them. The structure is so flawed and the old ways so entrenched small changes aren't doing any good at all

    Pros

Sainsbury's offers great internal opportunities to develop your career and professional skills. The company offers a wide range of management development courses to help with your progression. Line managers are particularly encouraged to help colleagues identify their development needs and provide opportunities to do this.

    Cons

Although personal progress is encouraged the promotion process and route can seem challenging and put some people off. This leads to many good colleagues decide to move externally for promotion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review support route for promotion and encourage more secondments and lateral changes.

    Pros

Not as much as responsibility as compared to old job as a Math Tutor, unless a team leader or manager is around and you want to impress them. Till operating is good and time goes by fast

    Cons

For someone relatively small, I hate stock replenishment when it comes to big products, it really aches and hurts my back for 8 hour shifts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the pay a bit and offer more chances for promotion or bonuses

    Pros

It's decent money for simple work and it's really easy to get along with staff it's more like a family atmosphere. Very good union, who are supportive and worth every penny.

    Cons

Bad tempered management, if they don't like you, bad treatment will persist for the duration of your time there because they take things very personally. A lot of management usually HR and dept. manager sleeping together, this happened twice in my store, this leads to a real us against them culture, because HR are supposed to be impartial to an extent but instead their judgement is clouded because their getting it on instead of being professional. No internal progression because the current management just keep the position for 10/20 yrs +, my manager had been there for 40yrs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Poor store culture, just get rid of most of the managers, some of them can barely speak English, lack common sense and are far too authoritarian.

    Pros

Since joining Sainsburys 7 years ago it has been a constant source of income and I have never felt insecure about redundancy or losing my job. It is a great company to work for but to work in retail you must be a particular type of person - patient, hard working and reliable. You must dedicate yourself to the job but I have never felt mentally challenged in this role due to the nature of serving customers, stacking shelves and other mundane tasks. I have been a student whilst working at Sainsburys and they are very flexible with my education responsibilities. After working at the company for 3 years you are paid for your sick pay and generally the managers are easy to get along with.

    Cons

I have never felt the need to go above my role as an assistant on a department but I have seen others try and fail down to reasons I could never understand, as I knew the person to be hard working, passionate and commit to the job without complaint. I have seen people not being paid correctly, sneaky decisions being made and overall I believe the disciplinary system is a disgrace. You are treated as a child when you ring in sick and are made to feel awful and guilty when things like "your letting your team down" or "it looks like you have planned this sick time off". I feel like a number here not a person and I think it is absolutely diabolical when the management say things like this and yet they dont hire any staff because they dont want to spend the money till the time is convenient for them. I am currently working on a department which is short staffed and being asked to commit my time over my contract, there is too much pressure being applied to the existing staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to the staff on the department and get advice from the people who work on it every day other than giving orders out without considering our view. I believe upper staff could do more to make sure everyone is happy in their job, and to recognize when something needs doing for the staff rather than when convenient for them i.e hiring
