    Pros

The benefits are outstanding, the employees are nice, the environment is relaxed.

    Cons

Managers in some departments are aware of policies and procedures. It's extremely difficult to move up within MD Anderson unless you know someone or highly qualified.

    Pros

    Health Benefits are great
    Salary
They put into the teachers retirement and Social security.

    Cons

    Poor management
    Corporate corruption
little job security depending on your position
Some people that need to be fired may not be fired because they are female or black despite being horrible
Promotion is mostly based on what looks good for the company as opposed to who deserves it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers should be promoted based on who is better able to do the job as opposed to those who have worked at the company for 20 or more years. Sometimes those individuals have poor management skills. Classes are offered but some individuals do not have the qualities or personality to be a better manager. Also during another recession the company should also cut from the top to save money. It does not make sense to fire individuals who are needed on the bottom, tell people who have traveling benefits they can't travel on the companies money and then allow the President to be escorted to the airport and pay for him to fly out every weekend to his second home. Next, there should be a better outside agency to help with issues inside the company. Corporate corruption is bad and for a non-profit organization it taints the companies reputation.

    Pros

No matter what job you are doing at the institution, you realize the overall goal of hopefully curing cancer.

    Cons

The work load has become rather difficult. The philosophy these days is do more with much less

Poor processes, top heavy management with silo's and turf wars. Nothing done quickly. Don't bring your easy button.

    Pros

good benefits and retirement. There are more resources(people - equipment and supplies) than the entire medical center.

    Cons

entitled people. management passes on bad staff to each other just to get rid of the problem staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't have MD's in charge, they are too competitive when it gets down to agreeing on any process.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You get to help people through the some of the hardest times in their life and that is a great feeling. You are exposed to some of the greatest minds in medicine and research. If you pay attention, you can learn a lot about the medical field and how it all works and is run. You are also exposed to different cultures through the people that you work with and the patients that you meet.

    Cons

The politics are horrible and there is a strong hesitancy towards change. There are standards rules and regulations but everything is subject to managements discretion in the end. Sometimes that can help but for the most part, I've seen several people treated unfairly because of it. HR is not very helpful. Unless you are in a position that is on the medical side (nurse, mid-level provider, doctor etc.) there really isn't room for growth. Promotion/growth is not based on what qualifications you have but who you really know that gets you places. Salaries aren't that great either. Most people are under paid for the work that they do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a closer look at the work our employees do. Try to implement incentive programs and actively promote your stronger employees. This will not motivate others do work harder and better, but it will improve the over all quality of the departments and hospital as a whole.

    Pros

Benefits are great! Great job security!

    Cons

If you consider applying at MD Anderson, consider to contact the head/director directly. The HR system is not well organized and they do not forward the appropriate applications to the directors/heads. HR is not well responsive and does not provide any updates on your submitted application.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be flexible! Appreciate your employers! Too much administration!!! There are so many administrators that are not doing anything - try lean management

    Pros

Very rewarding to know you are making a difference in patients' lives.

    Cons

Every department seems to be very tight financially. You can expect to be underpaid, and annual merit raises of about 1.5%. They also overload you with unreasonable amounts of work because they are unwilling to hire more staff to handle the increased workload.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees more and be willing to invest for the growth of the department.
