I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good benefits, smart people, lots of perks and good work/life balance

    Cons

Bureaucratic, sounds like cooperation among teams isn't very high. Probably more employee input into company decisions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fewer layers of management. Greater employee input

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Although it is in vogue to hate on Microsoft, it is a genuinely nice place to work. The people there are smart, professional and have a general air of maturity.

    Cons

The company is transitioning and while exciting, it leaves employees worried. I would say the meeting-to-work ratio is a bit too high for an SDE position, but that's the reality of huge corporations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To steal a play from the recently removed: Communicate, Communicate, Communicate. The old silos in the company are going away, but there are places where collaboration is encouraged but not well defined. Make sure that you give a clear vision for the One Microsoft and that it makes its way down to those who put the code to the products.

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Many resources to learn and grow, knowledgeable employees, many resources for fun events. Cool products that are widely used Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Xbox. Work life balance was also very good, no one expects you to work past 5 pm.

    Cons

I found it hard to make an impact at such a large company. It seemed like nothing I did really mattered and they put me on working on internal tools. Also Seattle location is not great, rained almost every week multiple times a week and that made it hard to go out and explore.

I have been working at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Amazing food, accommodation, culture, people !! The people here are amazing. You find a lot of young minds. They provide a lot of outings for the MACs and they even take you to the US!

    Cons

Work may be a monotonous. The pay is not really great. They could provide more pay. Also, the projects vary from one place to another. So you need to be a little lucky to get good projects!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing really. They are doing great. Maybe increase the salary for the people in IT

MSR Silicon Valley is an amazing opportunity for Ph.D students

Former Employee - Research Intern in Mountain View, CA (US)

I worked at Microsoft as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

World-best researchers in an academic-like setting, minus teaching / administrative duties. Think of professors at a top-5 school, but instead of grad students the researchers collaborate with each other. During summer, there is higher than a 1:1 intern to researcher ratio. The researchers have research they were wanting to do, but didn't have the manpower to. This is your opportunity. After the internship, there is good follow-up, and for me this led to a published paper that became a part of my thesis.

    Cons

An internship does not provide any extra advantage for future employment at MSR. The place is just too competitive. .NET is highly encouraged (if you like to choose your own languages).
