Former Employee – worked at News Corp full-time for more than 3 years

ProsLarge structured company.
Plenty of room to move up the ladder if you have the commitment and time!
They're always looking at the next big thing.
As long as they keep up to date with growing technology they should continue to be impressive.

ConsIt can be a bit of a fight at times to be recognised but thats pretty much the same for all large companies.
A little bit late adopting their magazines for digital.

ProsGreat benefits, nice people (mostly young families)

ConsLike any large company that has been around for a long time, some upper management are stagnant and resistant to change. Not all, just some

ProsPRO
High per diem rate for independent contracting, good personal support from staff, but that may have to do with a high comfort level with reporting from outside the central office and rarely being embroiled in internal office politics. Turnover gives one a chance to move up. Young, friendly staff.
Billing issues resolved in a good manner that is as efficient as they can be, given that the office I work with has to deal with a central bureaucracy. They want to keep their stringers happy.

ConsA sclerotic view of institutional change, e.g. expansion, has made it difficult to understand why a 6 billion dollar publicly traded company can't commit to a new news bureau. Artistically, limited change in form of news story. Creative potential not 100% realized.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo to bat more to make the news programming more of what you believe in your heart it should be.

ProsLot of interesting work done. A good learning experience. Not hierarchy driven. Very encouraging to new ideas. very friendly people

ConsNot many cons to write about. Its a good place to work. The work hours are stressful. Due to the dynamic industry the timings can be steep

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a need to breed in house talent to take up positions of responsibility. Developing cross functional capabilities is still nascent.

ProsThe opportunities for cross training and advancement are great especially because the company is so large. Recent reorganizations have improved the efficiencies within the organization.

ConsThe communication could be better and teams could take a less silo-ed approach to the business and customers.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue investing in your people and streamlining processes where possible. Redundancies and poor communication not only slow progress but expose weakness to prospects and customers.
