I worked at Opera Solutions full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Interesting proposals and ideas for projects
    - Interesting field with good potential
    - Good differentiation as consulting branch

    Cons

    - Financially unstable, bloated operating expenses
    - Very weak internal firm building
    - Exceptionally bad, downright mean, in treating employees during problems and difficulties
    - Firm running as silos with Principals and Partner's focusing only on their pet projects
    - Arbitrary and political promotions
    - Clear high level vision but no leadership nor clarity in execution. Bad implementation of overall strategy
    - Big difference for the worse between original ideas and actual client project. Ideas get dilluted

Absolute dissapointment - a wannabe Consulting firm with no leadership and poor senior management

Former Employee - Senior Associate in London, England

    I worked at Opera Solutions

    Pros

very little other than the good collegiate atmosphere across the firm (excluding managers to principals though). All people below Manager are really cool and very nice. I can say that I really miss a lot of them.

    Cons

Absolutely no transparency in the promotion / feedback process
clear cut between the base (analyst to senior associate) and the rest (manager to principal)
Total lack of leadership, principals bring no business and they have no understanding of how to manage teams.
Unclear strategy with the UK team: one day it's very strategic, the next day it doesn't matter much
Zero communication: one day you learn that everything is going well, the next day the firm might be for sale and the third day your colleagues call you to let you know that they have just been fired
Excluding 1 or 2 big clients monopolizing a large chunk of the consultants there is very little client relationship going on
Moving away from strategic consulting and now mostly focused on analytics. Great to invest in but not interesting to work for
Poor planning: the firm just crashed after having hired massive number of people, they had to fire 15% of the people, cut 10% of all salaries and bonuses were delayed forever...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell the firm to competent people who have the skills and the experience to properly develop this business and provide opportunities for its consultants to learn and develop new skills.

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Everything except senior management who repeatedly failed to provide leadership and guidance to an exceptionally talented bunch of employees

    Cons

I was an India employee and I have experienced that the leader in India and few of his cronies have reduced the India operation into a nonsense. They simply don't know (and want to either) how the analytics industry works and hence couldn't leverage the India operation full of bright people. They fired all the lateral hires because they were perceived as a threat and the leader in particular is very scared about his own prospects as the laterals outwitted him on many occasions. Now the situation is so bad that Opera is begging for Wipro's business - whereas Wipro wanted to leverage Opera as its analytics powerhouse! I think some good leaders can be hired for India and the situation can be salvaged. Damage control cannot be done by commenting on glass door posts - that too by junior HR trainees proxying as "management"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have the courage to hire laterally and challenge yourselves, shed you arrogance and submit to the fact that it needs a different type of skill sets to run an aspiring analytics shop. Not everything can be achieved by PowerPoint decks.

I have been working at Opera Solutions full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Some interesting projects, nice views from the office, currently there is probably a good opportunity for advancement given the mass exodus (very, very, very high attrition recently)

    Cons

There aren't very many good people left, the vast majority of the employee base (~90%) has been at Opera for < 2 years, no culture, shady moves by mgmt, inability to staff projects sufficiently given the high attrition = very high risk of not being able to deliver current engagements and recently sold engagements (clients beware), very bad benefits

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a new job - everyone else is looking, so should you (you probably already are)

I have been working at Opera Solutions full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Nice office view of Hudson river.
No one cares what you are doing (Pro for slackers). Otherwise see no pros and hope.
Management talks all positive that's it.

    Cons

Management confused as ever product company or consulting company. Make you work hard and when time comes of payout rules are changed so as delay the incentive and then pay few hundreds.
Management is clueless, frequent Town Hall's and talks. Busy flying around the world and cares least about employees.
Big Data is all BS. None of their products are delivered on time and as promised (Quality is out of question)
Please check with the customers, they are all very dis-satisfied.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice, It is damaged beyond repair. Every year new philosophy with new management and rules.

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time

    Pros

Free lunch on Friday, free food in the kitchen.
There were many, many good reasons to join this company. But these days are long gone.

    Cons

Political and confused senior management ruined a great company and started an unstoppable talent exodus. Future looks really uncertain, with an attrition rate never seen before. Offices are empty end depressing.

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time for more than a year

    Pros

This company is good for freshers only.

    Cons

Employees are getting fired without reason and being kicked like a thief. No training , No knowledge extension. Technically it is not using good technology in IT. It is outdated technology. No appraisal cycle is fixed. No way to evaluate employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should check the way Manager works. Some manager sits in US are working here as a contractor they are also working in some other companies as a contractor so they schedule meeting as per their comforts. They expects hard works without authority. They don't think about the life of others those works in India office. .

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time

    Pros

Bright folks before layoffs and mass exodus
    Friday lunch / office snacks

    Cons

    Bleak outlook for most verticals
No visibility into reviews, promotions, or bonus structure
Claims to be a products company when there is very little sw development expertise
Every year becomes the "worst year" for the firm
Change of direction every quarter is not yielding required results

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it's not a products company

I worked at Opera Solutions full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Strong industry knowledge, especially in healthcare

    Cons

    Terrible senior management
Lack of transparency and broken promises
Lack of integrity in the sales process, eventually leading client to unrealistic expectations and working team to terrible hours
    Bad beneifts package

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow the new CEO to bring his own people and radically change the leadership group
Abandon bogus products and homegrown technologies (e.g. vektor) to refocus on ad-hoc solutions and consulting engagements, especially where they strategically lead to new client relationships and improved domain knowledge
Move to a smaller office space (this one looks very empty and kind of depressing now)
    Increase salary and reintroduce bonuses
