Great Management Team, Great Store

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Albany, GA (US)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat work atmosphere, flexibility, employee discount, potential for mobility within company, variety of job tasks.

ConsWhile I love the store, the pay could be increased. Pier 1 does not pay associates enough to sustain living expenses. Shifts are typically 4 hours, and the best way to pick up hours is to be available when another associate calls out. Great place to work for a second source of income.

Advice to Senior ManagementFewer Employees on payroll, increase hours for established team members.

Some good & Not so good

Store Manager (Current Employee)
Riverhead, NY (US)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports full-time for more than 3 years

Pros- Company has made great technological strides in the past few years with new registers, scheduling systems, remodels and other updates.
- Good Inventory system.
- Lots of stores around the country, so plenty of opportunity to transfer.
- Good Paid Time Off for retail, one of the best I've seen in the industry.

Cons- A LOT of tenure in Store Manager and up. Very hard to move forward with such a backlog of potential candidates.
- Too much focus on Sales themselves, not enough on actual profitability. Hard to fault them for this as its typical of a lot of retailers.
- Workload can be intense. Company is good with trying to get SMs to work 45 hours or under, but sometimes they are not realistic with workload at all.

Advice to Senior Management- Continue making technological improvements, become leaders with upgrades, not followers.
- Look at the workload. Sometimes its too much for the payroll provided. Stores are different, not the same, you may need to allocate payroll differently.

Good Company, Perfect job for students

Material Handler (Current Employee)
Ontario, CA (US)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than 3 years

ProsAs a part time associate i have gotten 6 raises in the last 3 years, starting as a seasonal associate ($10/hour) and now to Material Handler 1 ( $16/hour). Very friendly atmoshere and because of my part time status i have flexibility with my work schedule to allow time for school. Full time associates do not have this flexibility

ConsFor the past 2 years, supervisors and HR reps have been in and out of the job, making the work environment disorganized. The work is very physically demanding, often seems impossible to hit production numbers of 100% that is required. Associates get fired very often. Also a lack of equipment like forkilifts make it difficult to do work efficiently. Part time associate benifits are not the best. During peak holiday season you can kiss your life goodbye, working 11 hours plus, good for your wallet but hurts family time.

Advice to Senior Managementive often felt under appreciated, make sure you take care of your hard working associates.

Underpaid

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports full-time for more than 7 years

ProsThe environment if really fun. Everyday is always different. The merchandise is so fun and unique.

ConsThey work you very hard and have huge expectations. This wouldn't be so bad if you were paid fairly. You can go to most other retailers and work in a lower position and get paid more.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to pay people what they are worth. Assistant Store Managers work very hard and are not paid well. Store Managers work even harder and again do not get paid enough for what they go through.

A fun place to work.

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
New Bern, NC (US)

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

ProsThe employee discount was a big plus. They offer insurance options for part-time employees. Opportunities to interact with people/customers from all walks of life.

ConsStore managers are in charge of scheduling. My personal experience was that the store manager continually scheduled me and another manager for weekend shifts, but refused to work more than one weekend for every two months despite higher management requesting she work more weekends. They require you to push their store credit card, so if you have a problem pushing 23%APR cards on people, this may not be the place for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would advise regional managers to require schedule submissions from store managers along with sales reports. This would give better insight to what problems may be leading to poor store performance.

Over staffed for seasonal means no hours for part-time newbies.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Pasadena, CA (US)

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

ProsVery fun environment especially if you are into home accessories. Co-workers and managers were easy to work with.

ConsNot good if you can't stand around for 8 hours even when it's a slow day, you have to keep pushing the newsletter on people which isn't too bad. Played unfair favorites in my case my co-worker felt cheated of employee of the quarter several times.

Great place to work!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Fort Worth, TX (US)

I worked at Pier 1 Imports full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood work/life balance. Great bonus program! Laid back company.

ConsOnce you are hired in for a particular position, you will be stuck with that position. No opportunities to move up within the company. People tend to stick around for a long time. Company pays below market value.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate more opportunities for people to advance. Pay people what they are worth.
