I worked at Pier 1 Imports

    Pros

    Fun co-workers
    Discount
    Flexible Scheduling
    Good Training for new employees
opportunity to work the truck which was at 5:00 am - 10:00 or 11:00 which was nice because you could go in early get out early and have plenty of time to enjoy your day when you got home.

    Cons

    very low pay
4 hour shifts about 3 or 4 days a week means not a lot of money to be made
Not a lot of opportunity for advancement
Have to PUSH the pier 1 card on everyone and hound them about why, which is ridiculous

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

25% employee discount and you get to see the item markdowns first.
Their training was thorough initially , but nothing continued from there.
They get employees involved with their sales and conversion numbers.
Day-off requests are thoughtfully considered and honored when possible.

    Cons

    Heavy lifting required during transitions.
Continual training/learning opportunities would be beneficial, but aren't in place.
Inventory system isn't always accurate and creates frustration for customers.
Freight comes in damaged too frequently.
No commision and low pay for what is expected of you at times.
They advertise items in commercials and their catalogs that aren't even attainable when they promote them.
Several staff members are disrespectful towards upper management and nothing is done to correct their behavior.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be consistent in all areas of management and train your staff continually. The more we learn, the more beneficial we are to the company and the easier your job becomes. You are there to run a business, not be anyone's friend.

    Pros

Great product, lots of technology, home office is very receptive to suggestions, online sales and instore sales both count toward store goals

    Cons

Too much product allocated, heavy lifting, credit card goals

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your workers more and you will have much more motivated employees.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Flexible scheduling, work-life balance.
    Good people.
    Laid back atmosphere.
    Allowed plenty of time off.
    Leadership was knowledgeable.
    Good employee discount.

    Cons

Schedules are all over the board, sometimes at 6am, sometimes at 11pm, occasional transitions would put you at work from 7pm-3am without a break. Somewhat expected for retail I suppose. Some people would request off weeks at a time, even holiday hires got the holidays off. Management conflicts, sales leaders would tell us to do one thing and manager would tell us to do another. Freight/stockroom is a nightmare at many stores, fulfilling customer orders is sometimes impossible. Selling the Pier 1 credit card is an absolute and you must maintain weekly quotas, it is a somewhat difficult card to sell, coming from my background in retail as it does not offer many incentives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train employees more-more hands on. Many employees don't know basic things like where the trash can is. Offer more incentives and even raises, $8 an hour is decent but for the amount of work many have to do, a raise would be a good incentive. Work on improving logistics. More competitors are moving into the area that will create issues for the small, expensive, and already struggling company.

I worked at Pier 1 Imports

    Pros

good employee discount , nice people to work with some of them anyway

    Cons

you have to keep pushing the credit card no matter how may times a customer will say no. you have to sign a promise note that you will get a certain # of credit card signups, that month,if you don't they don't like it, flexible schedule , so you have to call to see if you have to work , seasonal employees are treated like crap

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

less rules on credit card sales, people donnot always want this and do not appreciate being bombarded with it

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    1. 25% off associate discount on regular, sale, and clearance items
    2. Got payed higher than minimum wage.

    Cons

    1. Long 4-5 hour shifts without a break
    2. Flex days where you have to call in 2 hours before your shift to see if they need you. It's like being on call without getting paid.
    3. If the store is not busing you get sent home early; thus, cutting into your hours-and pay.
    4. They are very annal about how the store is set up. For example, tearing down and reorganizing the entire pillow wall (5 hour job) to make it look exactly like the picture in the planner. (Why bother when it's just going to get torn part and changed.) Only certain pillows and throws can site on the furniture, etc.
    5. Constant pressure to push the Pier 1 Rewards Credit Card. They are always nagging about it and you are expected to sell one per shift.
    6. Forced to get customers phone numbers, emails, and names at the register.
    7. Can only wear solid black or white tops.
    8. Be prepared for early morning 6 a.m. shifts and late night 12-1 am transition shifts. (These actually are better than working the sales floor because you actually have stuff to do.
    9. When the store is not busy and you aren't given a project you pointlessly walk around and straighten the store. It's extremely boring and the hours crawl by.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Stop pressuring associates to sell the P1RCC
    2. Give associates a 5-10 minutes break so that they can go to the back and grab a snack or some water. (Especially during a 5 hour shift.)
    3. Don't force associates to ask for email and phone numbers.
    4. Don't cut hours.
    5. Get ride of flex days or we should get paid because it ruins the whole day when you have to sit around and wonder if you need to go in.
