    Unfair management, always working weekends, unappreciated, low pay, terrible business ethics

    ProsThere is nothing that comes to mind.

    ConsLets start off with management because thats one of the biggest problems with this corporation, the management here is so shady ive worked in 7 different stores all but one was the manager pleasant to work for. I often felt as though there was so much tension between hair stylist and managers that even the customers would feel uncomfortable there , it results in hairstylist building clientele as fast as they can and leaving to a better work environment.
    Also understand working here means no weekends off ever unless you are the manager or friends with the manager, this also adds to a hostile work environment.
    Then the pay... the numbers are ridiculous of revenue collected in a month at most stores they can afford to pay more then minimum but this company does not care about the stylist so they pay you as low as your state will allow ,if Supercuts had it their way they would be paying you in beans. Sure you get tips, but because of the clientele the Supercuts draws in because if its chinsy demeanor you often get stiffed. And the "sliding pay scale" thats a carrot dangling in front of a donkey. No one I have ever met has slid a substantial amount the most ive ever heard was 30 cents.

    Advice to Senior ManagementCare for your stylist, they are the core of this operation.

    Lots of room for improvement if Upper Management would just LISTEN!!

    ProsHigh traffic, great guests, supplies equipment

    ConsLow commission pay scale, under staffed, working alone, turning away business due to lack of help, high turn over, poor management, favoritism, no floor mats (which is a big deal!), unfair scheduling, no education for new stylists, poor communication, no appointments for Senior/Master Stylists (guest complaints) and lack of open door policy

    Advice to Senior ManagementOpen up the lines of communication and listen to your managers and stylists. There are so many simple and common sense ideas we have that can help fix the lack of profit. Walk In Only Salons need new innovative ideas to help maintain our guest counts like master stylists booking appointments while newer staff gains clientel by taking walk ins.

    Stylists are NOT treated well.

    ProsFlexible schedule, get to try samples of newest products, get your own chair at a salon, easy interview, job does not interfere with home-life probably because they don't give you hours

    ConsPay is pathetic. They do not give full time hours. You'll work probably 25-30 hours a week at most on a percentage commission rate that probably will be around 40% - which is not good. Stylists work their butts off and do all the work in the salons but the managers don't really have to have clients and get 40k plus vacations while the stylists get nothing.

    Corporate office gets free lunches and easy office jobs and salaries while stylists get paid on low commission rates and are lucky to get a break let alone pay their bills.

    No bonuses for good work. Without us Regis would have nothing yet we are paid on a scale that is downright ridiculous. It might be fun to work in the corporate office but stylists are booked back to back, during a stressful day and get no reward for keeping the company afloat.

     Paycheck is not livable. stylists usually are competing for pay and some steal clients from one another which ensues in drama also.

    Advice to Senior ManagementPay your stylists well for giving your customer base what they desire! The stylists are the front runners of this business why can't you treat and pay them well for making you money off of THEIR hard work!! They deserve to see the money in their banks that they make FOR YOU with THEIR skills! If stylists are so worthless do the work yourself!!

    Used to be a good place to work, it's all going downhill quick with no end in sight.

    ProsIt used to be a friendly environment, you could come to work and enjoy for the most part being there. We had good hours and it wasn't as stressful.

    ConsYou can tell this company is going down or at least bankrupt, we all feel the tension. They wan't you to be robots and pay you nothing, squeeze all the juice out of you and the client. Rules are being changed constantly so much that you can barely keep up anymore, even clients are noticing.It's not a good place to work at least not anymore unless something changes drastically.

    Advice to Senior ManagementWhy don't you try to make the stylist happy so we can make the client happy? It trickles down, if we are happy the client will be happy. We can only pretend or put on a fake smile for so long...

    First Choice should be your last choice!

    ProsThe clients and colleagues. The option to cash in vacation time yearly. That is about it....not much here!

    ConsThe pay (minimum wage with a wage freeze). The District Leaders are all about their little fiefdoms. Recently some of the salon managers were promoted up. Unfortunately they choose the laziest, most immature ones to hire. Our D/L sits on her butt pretending to do work on the computer. What she is really doing is trying not to do clients (like her job description says she should be doing). We are reprimanded for the stupidest things. This leaves the staff demoralized and upset. Not once are we praised for hard work, sales goal achieved, or simply for a nice haircut. There are no rewards for the stylist. When they do offer incentives, they are things like a flat iron for the salon or something worthless to us. Not one iota of thanks for holding the company up. If it weren't for us...there would be no First Choice Haircutters. Thank God for our clients...this is the ONLY reason I am still here...but not for long.

    Advice to Senior ManagementRemember who makes the dollars for you. US. To the President....how do you sleep at night?

    Incentives Do Not Countermand Dodgy Ethics and Employee Relations

    ProsGenerally friendly staff in most locations

    Middle and lower management typically very accommodating

    First year stylists will easily build interpersonal communication skills

    Monthly contests render decent prizes and participation incentives

    Price point dictates constant demand despite any economic shifts

    ConsNear-minimum wage to start and little to no chance of increased remuneration.

    While friendly, staff does not subvert the industry tendency toward the immature and unmotivated.

    Internalized education is geared toward high volume, low quality production trains stylists to develop very poor techniques within their craft.

    Lower management is too busy with a high volume of patrons to complete basic duties.

    Middle management is severely limited in power by upper management restrictions and lack of lower management accountability.

    Upper management is rarely present on location and can typically by contacted only within a narrow time window and by middle management.

    Payroll and HR can only be reached by middle managers, all issues called in to payroll and HR by regular employees are redirected back through middle management or ignored.

    Scheduling is very haphazard; shifts are assigned randomly week by week. Seven to nine day streaks are not atypical. New scheduling optimization creates split shifts that span up to twelve hours.

    Work week is defined as Monday through Sunday so, for example, working nine days straight from Wednesday through Thursday typically will yield no overtime compensation.

    Legally mandated lunch breaks were rarely able to be taken and, when taken were continuously interrupted. Co-workers and middle management pressure one another constantly to not take said breaks.

    No upward mobility. Almost all positions above lower management and staff education are filled permanently or are not filled from within the company.

    Resigned voluntarily with three weeks' notice and vacation pay was not received with final paycheck on the next payday per Colorado law. After a second payday passed, contacted middle management and found that termination papers had still not yet been filed a month after the last day worked. Still unpaid, I'm told it will be another 15 days before the check is deposited.

    Advice to Senior ManagementAllow lower management more time off the salon floor to complete paperwork, deal with internal affairs, and resolve customer relation issues.

    Trust middle management's efficacy more, and promote from within. Current upper management tends to be little more than an obstacle.

    ProsIf you are fresh out of cosmetology school and the ink just dried on your license, this is a great place to hone your skills. Then you can take the skills you honed and go somewhere else to make a decent living. Along the way you will work next to some really kind stylists, build some clientele consisting of kind, decent customers.

    ConsLow/no staff, unstable hours/schedule, unlivable wages, run down salons, lack of customers, CEO and board members making too much money, horrible reputation as a company making it extremely difficult to get talented stylists to work for us. If they are talented and hire in, they will leave quicker than you can blink. This is a despicable company and it will soon be out of business.

    Advice to Senior ManagementYou should count your blessings that your smartstyle employees haven't joined the Walmart employees to organize a union for livable wages. Or joined the fast food strikes calling for a higher livable wage. A common argument against the fast food strikes is that the fast food workers are not qualified to make $15 an hour since they perform unskilled work. Well, your stylists are licensed professionals who make LESS than fast food workers. Therefore they have more reason to strike/unite for higher livable wages, right?

    Corporate is run by people who are not stylist and have no clue

    Prosi realy cant think of a pro. Ive had nothing but issues with this company since i started there. Thats why they have a high turnover with stylist. If you can sell thousands of dollars a month in extra services and retail you will do fine here. They will value you if you can achieve the ridiculous goals they set for your salon. They will even tolerate you stealing and altering your timecard as long as you can sell sell sell for them. But if your an honest person trying to do the right thing you are not valued at all. There mission statement is a joke because they dont follow it.

    ConsPay rate is horrible and commission is a joke. I advised those that are stylist to stay away. Nine out of ten stylists are miserable there.

    Advice to Senior ManagementKnow what your talking about before you advise your stylist. District leaders should be there to help the stylists not yell at them.
