Very good company to work for

Design Engineer (Current Employee)
Edinburgh, Scotland

I have been working at STMicroelectronics full-time

ProsHuge international presence, many experienced engineers, very good equipment available. ST have their own technology line making them leaders amongst only a few semiconductor companies overall.

ConsEven though big company, which implies stable employment prospects, they tend to have vast human resource. That is often pointed to when cuts are required to improve financial position.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep relations to academia as an excellent source of qualified employees. Allow for more opportunities for knowledge sharing between sites through expatriate schemes.

Been a great place to work shame it is coming to an end

Senior Principal Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at STMicroelectronics full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat people with a lot of different activities and skill sets all in one place. Rather than moving companies for a change of role you just transferred internally.

ConsThere are a lot of people with too much power and not enough knowledge making company wide decisions and mandating things on others.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the faultless management of the company.

Good work-life balance, but somewhat chaotic software practices

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Bristol, England

I have been working at STMicroelectronics

ProsIt is a good family-friendly place to work. The people are great and you get opportunity to work new and cutting-edge hardware.
This is a large company with many sites throughout the world and plenty of opportunity work with and travel to colleagues abroad.

ConsSoftware engineering follows an outdated "waterfall" methodology, which is better suited to hardware development.
The large organisation can lead to frustrating bureaucracy and poor communication

Risk averse management, government-like bureaucracy

Principal Engineer (Former Employee)
Ottawa, ON (Canada)

I worked at STMicroelectronics full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat technology, working with tier one suppliers and customers, exciting projects and products. Smart people to work with. Fair and decent employer with some of the best employee benefits around. Opportunity to learn.

ConsIngrained silo-mentality; not much cross-pollination between different divisions. Very hard to break into higher level management if you are not Italian or French. Internecine civil war between these fractions. Unnecessary layers of management. Company is treated as a social service by the French and Italian governments which are part owners, resulting in massive employment levels in those countries. Failures are not sanctioned. Cuts made in other parts of the world, impacting bottom line. High level decisions are often made based on political and economic realities of France and Italy, not on what is best for the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet a German or American CEO. Welcome bidirectional communication with employees. Take risks. Get off the government funding – it comes with too many strings attached. Get rid of nepotism, reward excellence.

Device Engineer

Device Engineer (Former Employee)
Rousset, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur (France)

I worked at STMicroelectronics full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThis company has great values (Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility is enforced), and the management trully believes in these values. I started in this company and I learnt a ton. I was regularly offered new missions to keep on learning, to keep on moving. HR policies are among the best I have witenessed: transparency, communication, and most of the time good listening skills. Even the salaries and benefits are good (for the region I was working in).

ConsThere is no real high management; however, HR reps told me there was a plan to put in place a proper high potential system in place in the next few years.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe less techies, and more business oriented.

Good working experience

Application Engineer (Former Employee)
Singapore (Singapore)

I worked at STMicroelectronics full-time for more than a year

ProsGood work life balance and benefits.
Good training from knowledgeable supervisors.
Support for ideas if you got the right manager.

ConsSlow and sometimes unclear progression.
Semiconductor industry has little room for growth without major restructuring. Need to re-focus in light of competition from China.

Advice to Senior ManagementRestructure properly and implement the right changes and not just for the sake of restructuring.
