Good first job

Intern (Former Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I worked at State Farm as an intern for less than a year

Prosworking hours revolved around my school time. Easy work. calm and tranquil environment. build a close relationship with workers. some events are fun. pay was a little above minimum but i was only a intern. great place to learn if interested in insurance

ConsTelemarketing is a must. Boring at times. Individuals will be rude. with out licensing you really cant do much but transfer calls, file papers, and telemarketing. since each agent sets up pay and commission it is a bit troublesome to get the pay you want.

Advice to Senior ManagementReally needs a better claims and faster response when calling headquarters. It always takes over an hour on wait time to fix problems and customers get upset.

Very competitive with products, likes life side, but cut throat tactics between agents and stealing people from area.

Life Specialist to Agent Intern (Former Employee)
Hickory, NC (US)

I worked at State Farm full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat brand name equals easy reknown. Easy for people to identify with.

ConsIf people already had a bad experience with a different agent, which there are a ton of agents then damage may be irrepairable.

Advice to Senior ManagementThin the herd of agents, push for team work, customers first, and not killing your fellow agents. Get a territory assigned demographically if already dense- spread out the offices- its rediculous!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good Company, Need Better Focus

Intern - Hourly (Former Employee)
Columbus, GA (US)

I worked at State Farm part-time for more than a year

Pros-Promote quality interactions with clients
-Focus on strengthening company from within the agent's office
-Good benefits

Cons-Not enough underwriters/service workers in the Alabama/Georgia area
-Poor communication within the company
-The "agent centered" mindset is not up-to-date
-Need to update customer service techniques (more stuff online)

Advice to Senior ManagementHelp agents grow by allowing them to excel at what they do best in their market- selling Life Insurance isn't everything.

Great Internship Program - Not so great entry-level

Marketing Intern (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA (US)

I worked at State Farm as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe internship program in 2009 for college undergraduates was an amazing learning experience, I was a marketing intern in the SF Bay Area. They paid for our company cards, travel to the internship competition and opportunity to present for corporate. Great experience learning about marketing strategy and how interact with executives! Heavy recruiting for entry-level positions.

ConsEntry-level positions were only in claims roles that were not well paid or suited to any other interests.

Cushy place w/good work/life balance but slow advancements

Intern (Former Employee)
Bloomington, IL (US)

I worked at State Farm as an intern for less than a year

ProsState Farm has a great work/life balance - from workplace events to the State Farm Park, etc. etc.
Benefits and compensation are good, and there is a good corporate culture of valuing loyalty to the company.

ConsIf you're like me and like to be challenged and thrilled each day at work, this is not the place. Things move slowly.

Advice to Senior ManagementInterns want to learn so use them! But don't just stick them w/paper pushing - that'll turn off your brilliant potentials because they'll want to seek out more exciting opportunities.

Internship at State Farm

Intern (Former Employee)
Blacksburg, VA (US)

I worked at State Farm

ProsGreat company to work for. Good business model and corporate support for the agent. Marketing techniques used within State Farm really help the agent in the long run.

ConsDidn't get paid. Not any work to do in the office. Was forced to do an internship by my college so I was pretty bored and angry about the whole process. Didn't learn anything I already knew and was a waste of time. Cons as an agent would probably be all the downtime in the office all the employees have.

Advice to Senior ManagementUtilize your interns in a more efficient manner. Hell, I would've washed his car if I didn't have to sit in the terrible office and stare at a computer for 8 hours everyday.
