Paychex Payroll Specialist Interview

Accepted Offer – Interviewed in Fair Lawn, NJ (US) – Reviewed Oct 10, 2012

Interview Details My hiring and interview process went very smoothly. I applied online on a Friday and received a call from one of Paychex's HR reps right after the weekend, on Monday. She was very pleasant and just asked me to walk her through my job history. I was directed to take an online examination on math and comprehension skills...literally a cake walk. The math skills that they test on are middle school level at most, so with the allowed use of a calculator no one who has graduated high school should be disqualified for not passing. The following morning, I received another call from the HR rep requesting me to come in for an in person interview. I was out of town, and she was accommodating, allowing me to come in for my interview the following Monday. I went to my scheduled interview and was required to fill out a paper application despite having previously filled one out via their online template. After filling out the paper application, I met with my first interviewer. He was nice and started off by having me ask him questions, then turned the tables and asked me some. He stuck mostly to questions about my resume. He had me fill out a personality survey and then told me that I was going to interview with two others at the office. I had to wait for about 15 mins for them, not a big deal. I next talked with two supervisors who were very friendly. They explained the stress that can be involved with the payroll specialist position and asked me a few "situational" questions about how I would deal with clients or coworkers in varying dynamics. They followed by allowing me to ask any questions I had at the moment and told me I would be interviewing with one more person before I was to leave. My final interviewer was, again, very friendly as everyone else had been. We talked for about 10 - 15 mins very cordially about my resume and about how the payroll specialist position is heavily customer service based. All in all, I was interviewed for 2.5 hours by 4 different people. They explained the company benefits, along with the 5 week training period. 3 weeks of training are to be held on location in NJ and the other 2 in Rochester, NY. After I left, I received a call an hour later from the HR rep extending an offer of employment. I completed the necessary paperwork for the background check and visited a nearby lab for a drug test. My entire hiring process from first call by the HR rep to offer of emplyment was one week.

Interview Question – All of the interview questions were generic, expected questions. The "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" is the one I always have the most difficulty answering.   Answer Question

Other Details - I applied online and the process took 1 week.
