Former Employee - Quality Assurance Tester in El Segundo, CA (US)

I worked at Activision Publishing as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Quick turn-around from hire date to pay; one week for contract, two week for full. High probability of immediate overtime/weekend hours may lead to a significant short-term income boost for low-wage workers. Access to Trade Show Events such as Entertainment Expo(E3). Donut/Bagel Mondays are a treat. Universal Giveaways may vary, but are usually of the console game and/or t-shirt sort.

    Cons

The El Segundo QA offices may be described to feature a culture of fear. Sweeping layoffs are common, and vary in predictability. This turbulent, revolving door environment suffocates productivity as managers obsess over database entry counts above all other qualities. Contract workers are regularly segregated from their full-time peers, and may be subjected to degrading verbal statements from the senior management. An example includes, references to "monkeys" in a derisive tone in regards to temps have been noted. Humiliation tactics are employed to shame both contract and full-time which have included rapid de-promotions to vocal outbursts of dissatisfaction with an employee's performance in front of peers.

Furthermore, there is little consideration for work-life balance for employees of any status. Members of Technical Requirements and Submissions are especially vulnerable to excessive overtime hours. The norm is an hourly wage for any employee in El Segundo which hinders time-off requests since doing so will deeply impact the take home wage that starts around 10-11 hourly for temps to few dollars more an hour for full/permanent.

Limited opportunities for growth in the industry. QALA (El Segundo) is very much isolated from both the developers and publishing/marketing arms of the company. Additional training, networking, and skill development in the field are not encouraged as deeply monitored hour to hour metrics leave no room for the acquisition of career forwarding, skill improving development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Abandon the divisive tactics and metrics that pit employees and groups against each other. Obtuse secrecy and caste-system tiered rewards also contribute to division on the floor and negatively affects productivity by creating a second class employee environment.

Adopt inclusive policies and practices that encourage teamwork, and improve morale for both contract and permanent associates. Office culture flows from the top down, if the QA manager(s) hold negative views of the contract employees that attitude quickly spreads across leads and seniors to the detriment of everyone.

We Make Fun could be a part of QA, not apart from QA.
