I have been working at American Red Cross full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Amazing organizational mission makes one feel good about going to work. Family-friendly and flexible working arrangements are available if needed.

    Cons

Constant change in personnel and organizational structure makes consistent work product challenging. Promotions are arbitrary. Too much emphasis placed on decisions by large teams with no clear leaders to make important decisions, leading to too many meetings, too little emphasis and rewards for good work and results. Management should empower people to make decisions and be accountable. HR needs to revisit its compensation strategy and not assume a one-size-fits-all approach to pay structures works across business units and functional teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retention of good employees will be a problem if compensation is not adjusted to get closer to market and promotions are not based on merit. Rewarding people for their commitment with certificates and pins is nice but doesn't put food on the table. Consider whether reorganizational efforts and related expenses are actually a good use of donor dollars.
