Current Employee - Commodities IT Developer in London, England
Current Employee - Commodities IT Developer in London, England

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Good implementation of technologies in Greenfield projects. A great place to see top class investment banking implementations.
    - Lots of in-house courses available which are easily booked through company intranet.
    - IT staff get a subscription to Safari books online which makes getting books to learn new technologies easy.

    Cons

    - Barclays have an IT "location strategy" which was initially introduced as “expansion”, which involves getting rid of employees in high cost centres and moving the head count to India. There is general low moral partly due to seeing good colleagues being let go, and partly due to the staff in India being a very mixed bag in terms of ability, leaving the few remaining staff in other costs centres to pick up the slack.
    - Long hours and hard work are not recognised and considered the norm. Hours seem to be getting longer and longer as there are fewer and fewer staff outside India.
    - The technologies used are not cutting edge but a few years out of date. That said this is the norm for investment banks.
    - Appraisal process seems fundamentally flawed as a forced distribution is employed with 80% of the staff getting met expectations and then the rest falling in either the underperforming or top performing categories. The problem is that it is upper management that decided this rather than direct managers, meaning visibility is far more important than doing a good job.
    - Overly bureaucratic to the level where it seriously impedes progress and project success.
    - Recently I have seen many failed projects as management in London struggle to efficiently manage developers in India.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Don't underestimate the value of co-location
    - Savings on paper are necessarily savings in reality

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
