Current Employee - M&A Tax in London, England

I have been working at Deloitte full-time (more than 3 years)

Good perks and support. Pension is now good, you can contribute up to 8% and Deloitte will match it with 12%. Other good perks such as healthcare, and benefits increase once you get to Manager grade. Good discounted gym for London users.

Being a large network, there is plenty of opportunity to meet other people in different lines of work which could make it easier for an internal move.

This is a huge network and so every department is like working for a separate company with its own separate politics, work ethics and personalities.

For the department I used to worked in (M&A tax), we were simply not paid enough. We are working long hours, regularly past 8pm in busy season and we are not remunerated like lawyers.

I also found it an extremely political place, and consequently my annual bonus was pitiful and risible (3 figures which considering I'd slogged that year, many late nighters, the occasional all-nighter).

Furthermore, the current problem is the generation difference. A lot of partners of today have got there on the gravy train and simply do not give a sh!t about younger staff. They show no desire to develop or retain younger talent as they assume there will be some new mug willing to take their place. Recently this trend is fading. The most miserable grade were senior managers, stuck in a job where they worked very hard for little reward and some often trapped from getting to director and progressing in their careers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One of the lessons I learnt from my department were to upkeep team morale. Previous generations of partners would regularly keep their staff entertained with monthly drinks and spontaneous offers (lunches, dinners) to reward hard work and enhance team spirit. Now, this is very inconsistent and varies from partner to partner, it can also depend on the group's head partner.

Also the firm drones on about retaining top talent, which is understandable, but they show zero interest in developing those who aren't their strongest performers. Given the retention of Big 4 recruits is very low (5% from original intakes), supporting the not-so outstanding performers could unearth late bloomers and help secure more people who will commit their long term careers to the firm.
