Good place to work if you have given up on your career or if you enjoy working in a "public sector" type of environment

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Guildford, England

    I worked at Ericsson-Worldwide full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility and benefits (to the extent that some people show up in the office once a month!!!), training opportunities and attempts to facilitate internal mobility and exposure to other projects/departments

    Cons

    - Centralised company structure, i.e. all strategic, market research functions are based in Sweden. Local units are tasked mainly with execution.
    - Within the Global Services segment, the company has taken on board a number of engineers and low/mid level managers from various outsourced contracts that has won over the years. Unfortunately, the although margins have waned, manager compensation has not been adjusted to reflect current compensation levels. As a result, salaries for entry level positions have been slashed to retain the overall cost base in moderate levels. Employee turnover within the manager level is almost zero (wouldn't blame them knowing that with their skillset they are looking at very steep base salary reductions elsewhere) and much higher for engineers.
    - Most of the managers have not been properly trained and lack basic management and leadership skills as well as the necessary emotional intelligence
    - Often new teams are created which do not address specific structural problems, hence introducing more complexity to the organisation and hindering decision ability. It seems that the underlying reason is simply to promote new managers.
    - Communication has gone downhill since employees were allowed to work from home on a frequent basis. Face to face communication has been substituted with online meetings.
    - Wherever business has been lost engineers have been let go, whereas most of the managers have retained their positions (and benefits) or have been reshuffled. Consequently, productivity at that level is extremely low, hence they try to keep themselves busy by organising numerous meetings.
    - Plenty of overpaid "dead wood" in some departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Properly address employee engagement issues
    - Low hanging fruit: Ample opportunities to streamline your SG&A by reducing the number of low/mid level managers and gradually adjust their compensation to industry levels.
    - Reward, train and retain the next generation of engineers and managers that will add value to the business through increased productivity levels.
    - Scrutinize structural change proposals and question underlying reasons.
