I worked at IHS full-time (more than 5 years)Pros
The company has been growing fast (mainly through acquisitions) and is well known in some industries. It is a nice brand to represent, I was very proud of it. Good benefits and good sales training.Cons
- I was very excited and motivated when I joined few years ago, but as the company grew, some people ended up in management positions without any experience or training on management. It is also a skill that should be a minimum natural. This has lead to see entire teams quitting after 2 years, demotivated people and a lot of frustration.
- Salaries are relatively low compare to the market and raises are not to be expected. Bad sales incentives. It is worth it for people looking for a first experience, for 2-3 years maximum, then you need to move. Sales people turnover is starting to cost them a lot, and they have also lost a lot of very experienced analysts and consultants, very well respected in their field.
- If you spend most of your life at work, you want to make it an environment where you feel safe and happy, where you can easily spend extra hours, but this place doesn't have much of that spirit, it's just a job, go in, go out.
- Make sure you are buddy with the right people, it is mainly about who you know there.Advice to ManagementAdvice
Before putting people in management position, make sure they have a minimum of interpersonal skills, and provide training. Not everyone is meant to become a manager.
