I worked at Marketo full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The product does something potentially very cool, letting companies market much better, in a data-driven way. If that gets implemented well, then tied into analytics - both those within the product offering, plus probably some additional firepower - a company could really prosper as a Marketo customer. The company was founded with a very clear idea of a market need and dogfooded their way to early success and a solid IPO.

    Cons

Harsh corporate culture, and completely unnecessarily so. CEO is a self-proclaimed "a-hole" operating at a Steve Jobs level of self-centeredness and arrogance, but a much lower level of brilliance. The core software and UI are at a point where they need to be taken apart and re-implemented for speed, security, and functionality, as is often true of startups' core software, but that will never happen with current management in place, who are dazzled by their own brilliance and success up through the IPO.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell out to a sympatico larger company that can combine Marketo's offering with some other pieces, allowing it to fulfill its potential. Then retire and go count your money somewhere.
