I worked at Royal Bank of Scotland as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

Everything except the culture - salary, opportunities, working environment are all great

    Cons

There is a lack of a culture of respect, that permeates the whole organisation and a legacy from Goodwin's time. There have been efforts to change it, but it's slow progress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Until there is a change of significance at the top, and installation of managerial culture that truly values employees rather than paying lip service to employee engagement initiatives I don't see anything changing. 4 big changes I'd make:

Make managers accountable for managing their people (for clarity, that doesn't mean senior/middle managers bullying junior managers to make decisions that long term are more damaging to the business - but building genuine leadership capability)

Change the language of the business - if you want to change the culture then the values initiatives you spend an obscene amount of money on need to become part of the corporate everyday language. If you can't refer to it and point to it in your every day activities, then RBS is not living the values. And stop referring to people as human capital. Your employees are not the human capital of RBS... they ARE RBS.

Start realising that when you refer to customer, that also means your employees.... most of whom actually are your customers - that might help the reframing of the 'respect' agenda

Everyone understands that with the contraction of the business this means a reduction in jobs across the Group - but start involving senior HR support (with more clout than simply agreeing with the accountants view of how the business should be run) in decisions involving major people changes. I've witnessed major change programmes, including of HR, being run by those seen as operational senior change agents but with no understanding of the long term people/engagement of loss of intellectual capital impact on the business long term. This isn't going to leave you fit for the future, and likely to cost you more long term.
