Stanford is an outstanding place to work: excellent people, excellent resources, excellent weather.

I have been working at Stanford University full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

As a postdoc, your advisor, of course, matters far more than the particular institution you attend (at least if you plan to become a professor). However, if you have to make a choice between equally attractive labs, and one is at Stanford and the other is on the East Coast, Stanford is a clear winner: the people tend to be friendlier, the weather is far nicer, and in general the institutional resources are similar between Stanford and Harvard/MIT/Princeton.

    Cons

The cost of living in the Bay Area is high. The minimum postdoc salary for 2014/2015 is ~$45,000, but you're unlikely to find a one-bedroom apartment for less than $2,500 per month. Even a studio apartment typically costs between $1,500 and $2,000.
