I worked at University of Waterloo full-time

    Pros

There's lots of room for movement within the university, and the uni is working on increasing internal mobility. Of course, work experiences will vary across departments, but my supervisor in CECA was phenomenal, and the exec worked hard to make communication within a large department (and with staff spread across Canada) work smoothly. Some of the universal pros to working at Waterloo include: absolutely great benefits package, confidential career advising for staff, a staff association advocate, and policies designed to promote professional development. I was impressed that the university seemed to take an arm's length approach to the staff advocate role and career advisor role, instead of trying to make them serve a larger organizational mandate. Many departments seem to have flex time.

    Cons

As at any university, there can be difficulties bridging the perspectives of staff and faculty. You'll also find the occasional bad apples - and they sometimes stick around, since the university has (good) policies in place to make sure that people are given reasonable coaching rather than prematurely fired. The people I met who seemed dissatisfied with the university as an employer had typically been there since the year dot, and had no points of comparison.
