JOB SUMMARY
The Physical Therapy Assistant is a technical health care worker who is a graduate of a program accredited by an agency who performs selected physical therapy procedures and related tasks under the direction and supervision of a Physical Therapist.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Below are the roles and responsibilities that the Physical Therapy Assistant is expected to fulfill to help facilitate quality, patient-centered care in the facility:
- Apply physical therapy procedures to patients through the use of therapeutic exercise, mechanical traction, therapeutic massage, compression, heat, cold, ultraviolet, water, and electricity.
- Manage the measurement and adjustment of crutches, canes, walkers, and wheelchairs and instruction in their use and care.
- Provide instruction, motivation, and assistance to patients and others in improving pulmonary function, learning and improving functional activities such as pre-ambulation, transfer, ambulation, and daily living activities; and the use and care of orthotics, prostheses, and supportive devices.
- Performance, without interpretation, of selected measurement procedures such as range of motion, gross strength of muscle groups, length of body parts, and vital signs.
- Provide accurate updates on the patient’s progress in therapy to the interdisciplinary team.
- Modify treatment procedures as indicated by patient response and within the limits specified in the plan of care, and reporting orally or in writing to the physical therapist.
- Communicate with members of physical therapy staff and other health team members, individually and/or in conference, to provide patient information.
- Identify individualized expected outcomes with client, family and other healthcare providers’ participation.
- Responsible for patients’ appropriate, continuous and uninterrupted care by coordinating services, discharge planning and caregiver training.
- Inform nursing department of any changes in patient’s medical condition.
- Closely monitor patient pain during therapy and communicate to the nursing department and/or physician regarding effective pain management.
- Demonstrate competence in the clinical knowledge, skills and technology utilized in patient care as appropriate.
- Deliver care in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity, while preserving and protecting client autonomy, dignity and rights.
- Acquires and continually enhances knowledge in current physical therapy practice to benefit patient care.
- Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, co-workers, interdisciplinary team members, and others as appropriate.
- Establish rapport with patients to encourage participation in therapy program.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapy Assistant program
- Licensed in the State of Illinois as outlined in the Illinois Therapy Act.
- Minimum one year of experience working in a long-term care facility.
- Strong communication, organizations, and leadership skills.
- Self-motivated and able to work both independently and in collaboration with others.
