Current Employee - Software Developer in Lansing, MI (US)

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 5 years

Benefits, low expectations, hours of work, and discounts. Overall the company is great to work for. If you are a hard worker and put in a little extra time you can do very well here. They pay for some continued education and are finally starting to get the message that software developers want to work flexible schedules. IT leadership is improving.

Compensation for high end software developers, software development process, disconnect between executive business and IT. On the software side, the main problem is they develop elite talents and then let them walk because they are unwilling to open up their pocket books. Like a lot of insurance places, they are insurance places, not software places so this is understandable. They started a promotion process that requires you to get software designations. The problem with that is people put the work in and then leave for higher pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wish the CEO and president could see what one elite developer could do compared to four average ones. That needs to get conveyed. You just can't treat software developers like underwriters. Not in this day in age.

    Interview Details

Quick, not a lot of time with the people you interview with. 4 interviews with various departments. Lasted a total of 20 minutes. Interviewers are very friendly. No hard questions, no questions that take you out of comfort zone. Very laid back interview process. Waiting for a response from the company takes a long time.

    Negotiation Details
They won't negotiate. The offer is the offer. You can take it or leave it.
