I worked at Cravath Swaine full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The rotation system. The rotation system involves essentially changing your corporate law specialization approx every 18 months (three broad divisions are M&A, securities, and bank financing). It forces you to become very proficient at each type of work, and also to figure out how to learn things very quickly because you have to get up the learning curve asap whenever you rotate to a new group/practice area.

    Cons

This place is not for people who need handholding. The hours are VERY demanding, which is typical for a top tier NYC law firm, but I think there's generally less tolerance for complaining/outside interests than at other firms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wouldn't change the formula, all things considered. If you can put in your time at Cravath you're generally going to walk away with a very good command of the work, even though you'll have to pay some dues to get there. I can't speak to the partnership route as I didn't stay long enough to be up for consideration.

I applied online. The process took 2+ monthsinterviewed at Cravath Swaine.

    Interview Details

Process took over two months (due to travel delays). I interviewed twice at Cravath, and each time I was quickly notified of the future interviews. I interviewed with three people each time, and each set of interviews lasted about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Beware that travel costs are not covered by the company.
