Describe your most memorable Expedia moment.
I was on the flights team and at the end of the summer we had a party to celebrate the changes on the air team, and I was able to see the CEO dancing around with all the employees!

What's a typical day at Expedia like for you?
My team normally gets into the office around 9:30 a.m. During the mornings it's pretty quiet, and everyone is focused on work. Almost every day a group of the team will grab a bite to eat somewhere in downtown Bellevue. The afternoon is the best part – everyone is refueled and there are lots of conversations going on, mostly about work but we are not perfect and do get off topic. People always have good stories to tell, and of course there are the nerd gun fights to give our team a little break.

What's the best part about working here?
The people. The work. The results. The parties.

What are three words you'd use to describe working here?
Exhilarating. Rewarding. Worth it.

Why did you choose to work at Expedia?
The people. Everyone that I talked to had nothing bad to say about the company, and always had a smile while working. Everyone works hard, but Expedia knows how to have a good time and lets the employees know when they have done great job.

Why did you choose to work at Expedia?
I chose Expedia because of its dynamic work environment, the competitive industry it leads, the many international opportunities it provides, and the smart and friendly people I get to work with.

Describe your most memorable Expedia moment.
When I was asked to make a presentation to several senior executives (including the CEO of my group) at the end of my summer Product Manager MBA internship at Expedia.

Tell us about your most exotic destination.
Capri, Italy. It has the bluest water, the most sheer cliffs, the most winding roads, and the most spectacular villas I've ever seen.

What's the best part about working here?
The responsibility you're given is significant - whether as a full-time or an intern. Your efforts and decisions have a real impact on the business.

What do you do for fun?
Bike, hike, yoga; chill out with family and friends.

A company with a real buzz... but perhaps not the best employer for women

I have been working at Expedia full-time for more than 3 years

You'll never have a boring day at Expedia - the company is extremely agile and there is always more work than there are hours in the day. If you want a job where you can relax safely within your comfort zone, this isn't the right employer for you - but if you thrive on change and enjoy new challenges, you'll love Expedia.

Leadership is generally good and seems to make a real effort to keep staff up to date on developments and strategy. There are a lot of type A personalities, so be prepared for a degree of competition and infighting - but in 99% of cases, this drives the business forward and helps to create the buzz that makes Expedia so successful.

The company is also one of the most diverse I have ever worked for. A typical meeting will be attended by staff from 5-6 countries, all with competely different backgrounds. The diversity means that you can pretty much be yourself in the workplace - everyone is different and accepts difference in others!

Pay and benefits are both very generous - there is a flexible benefits system where you can choose what to spend your 'benefits allowance' on, so benefits are tailored to individual needs. This is fabulous.

Within the Retail organisation, there is a distinct lack of women in senior positions. There are plenty of fabulous, ambitious women in the business, but I feel that many of them are sidelined during pregnancy or forgotten about while on maternity leave. This really has to change - I don't think that leadership is fully aware, yet it is a frequent topic of conversation among female staff.

Another concern is the fact that most staff feel that the one sure way to get promoted is to socialise with the leadership team. It seems wrong that only those who party hard with that group are considered for promotion, while others are overlooked. This also puts women at a disadvantage - those with young families or longer-than-average commutes struggle to join in.

Training could be better - there are not too many opportunities for mid-level managers to enhance their skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to how women feel at Expedia. There has been much grumbling about the lack of opportunities for female employees recently and I don't think leadership is aware of this.

    Application Details

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Expedia in August 2014.

    Interview Details

I had an initial Skype interview of about half an hour with the team leader from the US team. It was simple, usual questions such as why I want to leave my job, why Expedia, etc. Plus two maths questions.
I was then told I had passed this first interview and the next step was 7 interviews with different people in the company. I could do them over one or two days. I obviously chose one as I had to take time off work. The day was quite long, I spoke to people who had nothing to do with the actual job I had applied to, and half of them were really surprised and did not know what to ask me as I had such little work experience on my CV (I graduated about a year ago).
In the end they did not offer me the position as they were looking for someone more qualified. It was extremely annoying to waste the whole day and go through all of this when my work experience was written black on white on my CV and they could have told me before that they wanted someone with more work experience!!
