I have been working at Habitat for Humanity full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Being an Americorps member reflects your desire to help local communities and gain job experience. Service provides good job experience performing community outreach, and managing volunteers and projects. The knowledge of the Americorps program is growing and provides some benefits for applying for jobs afterwards. Service provides emotional and spritual rewards. A recurrnig mantra, borrowed from hebrew tradition, "He who saves one life saves the whole world entire."

    Cons

Service is similar to full-time volunteering, requiring a full-time schedule with an 11-month committment. Also, there are many early mornings. It is a lot of hard work for little pay and few monetary rewards; its also mostly for people in their younger 20s. A person is able to gain experience, but a job is not guarenteed afterwards and you need to finish your 11-month, 1700 hour committment before receiving the educational award.

Thanks to Habitat for Humanity, more than 2 million people worldwide know there's no place like home. The mission of the not-for-profit, ecumenical Christian organization is to provide adequate and affordable shelter. It has built more than 400,000 houses at cost for families who demonstrate a need and are willing to invest "sweat equity" during construction. Homeowners make payments on no-interest mortgages; Habitat for Humanity funnels the funds back into the construction of homes for others. The group operates in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto... More
