Mu Sigma addresses this critical need and enables organizations to institutionalize analytics and Decision Sciences in a sustainable manner.

Creating Decision Sciences talent is not a one-time effort, but a continuous process. This talent needs to be groomed and nurtured in an environment where art and science can exist in harmony.

Building an analytically strong organization that is focused on helping people make better, faster, data-driven decisions, wouldn’t have been possible without a holistic view of Decision Sciences. The future will witness the notion of analytics evolving into Decision Sciences encompassing Math + Business + Technology + Behavioral Sciences.

To achieve our vision of building the world’s largest Decision Sciences organization, we are focused on creating Decision Sciences soldiers, captains and generals.

What is the Mu Sigma environment like?

Despite nearly quadrupling in headcount since I joined Mu Sigma in early 2008, we have still managed to retain the dynamism and high energy environment that is a hallmark of any successful startup. I enjoy working with some of the smartest minds who truly believe in the ability of numbers and technology to shape the future of decision making in the business world.

Tell us what led you to Mu Sigma and how your career has progressed so far?

I joined Mu Sigma from a consulting background looking for more autonomy and learning opportunities. I started out as a Manager leading a six-member team. In less than 18 months I was leading a 50+ member account and had moved to the next level of the organizational hierarchy. The last three years in Mu Sigma have been a great learning experience and I feel glad to have been able to make a difference.

What has been the biggest surprise in working at Mu Sigma?

The almost fanatical stress on open and direct communication irrespective of the hierarchy was somewhat of a surprise for me. I believe it is one of the many "right" things we have done that have got us to where we are today.

What do you like to do outside Mu Sigma?

I am a film connoisseur and try to catch up on good cinema in my leisure time. I used to go on long rides and camping on my motorbike earlier and have been to some of the remotest parts of the country. That is something I would like to resume.

What is the Mu Sigma environment like?

Mu Sigma is a great place to learn. I don’t think there are many companies where people in the first few years of their career get the opportunity to lead a team and interact with the client directly. Moreover one makes decisions that he/she is held accountable for. Here the fact that “you own the project” keeps each of us motivated to go to the next level. Besides, you have an amazing mix of peers with great statistical expertise and Mu Sigma provides you with the platform to travel that extra mile of self-satisfaction.

Tell us what led you to Mu Sigma and how your career has progressed so far?

I have always wanted to be part of a company where I could relate my work to the various business objectives. At Mu Sigma, I started out as a Business Analyst. Eventually, with appropriate training from the Mu Sigma University and exposure to challenging business problems, I was able to deliver my best - getting promoted to the role of a senior analyst in less than 15 months. I have been working onsite for the last 10 months. The learning has been unmatched. This is a huge career boost for me and Mu Sigma gave me the chance to make it worth the while.

What has been the biggest surprise in working at Mu Sigma?

It is undoubtedly the work culture! The attitude and the sincerity to accomplish a task are unrivaled. Here, we'd go any extra mile to ensure that the end objective is met, without compromising on the Values for which we stand.

What do you like to do outside Mu Sigma?

Cricket is my passion. I play in the North West cricket league at Seattle. I used to be the captain of the Mu Sigma cricket team when I was in India.

What is the Mu Sigma environment like?

The passion and energy is extremely infectious. To be filled with interesting people keeps you going with the same amount of drive and enthusiasm. For me, the biggest strength of Mu Sigma will always be its people. Company in a company matters!

Tell us what led you to Mu Sigma and how your career has progressed so far?

When I look back, since my time of joining Mu Sigma, one thing that I have been totally grateful for is the high expectations set by my managers. This has ensured that I brought out the best in me.

I have wanted to be part of an organization that lets me explore my potential every day. I sincerely feel there is no better place I could have started my career, than with Mu Sigma. Opportunities to grow and learn are immense. Each day brings new surprises, new challenges and I am enjoying the journey.

What has been the biggest surprise in working at Mu Sigma?

Definitely the transparent work culture. I absolutely do not hesitate to reach out to anybody, at any level here - be it Senior Manager, Senior VP or even the CEO. The best part is that this both way communication is encouraged in Mu Sigma.

What do you like to do outside Mu Sigma?

I am very passionate about music and love singing. I also look forward to spending time with family and friends. Reading and travelling would also be a welcome break.

Prayaas - An effort to give back to the Society

PRAYAAS is Mu Sigma’s effort to give back to the community and work towards a better society. Through our efforts, we reach out to the underprivileged viz. a viz. services ranging from teaching poor school children, working with old age homes, orphanages, NGOs, to conducting awareness programs for causes like AIDS, Child Education, Global Warming, Animal Welfare and Deforestation.

We employ the levers of autonomy, mastery and purpose to drive happiness at work

We have been inspired by Daniel H. Pink's Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us.

In Mu Sigma, we believe that inferential learning is of greater importance than experiential knowledge. The organization is built firmly on the duality of irreverence and humility. Irreverence for the challenges before us and the confidence to face them head-on. Humility to accept that we are not the best and that we could solve these problems from first-principles. This environment of nurturing enables our employees to gain mastery over the field of analytics.

This ecosystem in turn ensures that we achieve our higher purpose - to help our client make better decisions through a better art for problem solving. It also means that we aim at autonomy by wanting to be the world’s largest decision sciences company; build this industry as we build the company. We want to be the authority in the field of decision management and institutionalize data driven decision making. And we enable this by driving the adoption of Math + Business + Technology + Behavioral Sciences and building the “Mu Sigma inside” model – where there is a little bit of Mu Sigma in every major organization that prioritizes informed decision-making.

Mu Sigma's Decision P3, a holistic ecosystem of People, Processes and Platforms, helps institutionalize analytics in a scalable and sustainable manner.

Continuous business transformation has led organizations to leverage data to improve the overall decision making process. Analytics is seen as a key driver for innovation and competitive advantage, with companies looking to scale the use of analytics across their organizations on an ongoing basis. As a result there is a lot of focus on filling the talent shortage for analytics and data science. However, institutionalizing analytics is not just about people. It requires the right man-machine combination of people, processes, tools and technology platforms. Mu Sigma offers its customers this integrated decision support ecosystem.

I worked at Mu Sigma full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great exposure to the world of analytics
Steep learning curve and lot of opportunities to try your hand at various aspects like sales, BD, consulting
You will develop some high level connects with your clients which again is a great learning opportunity.

    Cons

The culture sucks big time. Treating employees with respect is an alien thing at Mu Sigma. In the last six months at least 60% of my team (onsite) left including me. It is not a place where lateral hires can expect a good growth as there is a strong bias towards folks who have been with mu-sigma since inception. The salary is a big negative but it is not something that the company tries to hide. I saw that most people who worked with others companies leave in about an year. Some of the people who joined Mu-Sigma from the clients have left in a span of few months.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do think about how you treat your employees. Not recognizing that they are part of your success is a big risk you are taking. The company is growing enormously and has a recognition in the industry. It is important to retain good talent without which the growth won't be stable in the long run.
