I have been working at US National Guard full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

If you have a boss who'll support you, there is no limit to the areas you can tackle. While some folks sit back and coast, you have a lot of leeway if you want it. If you don't have a supportive boss, expect to be told to sit still and draw within the lines.

    Cons

Maybe most places are like this but you really need to market yourself here. Not in a showy, self agrandizing way (no place likes those kinds of spotlight rangers) but in a "if no one knows what you are doing then it doesn't matter". Don't expect to be pushed to do new things- you have to push yourself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop shifting personnel with less than 24 months in position. Turn over within a year is a waste for the guy who left, the guy who is leaving, and the new guy coming in (to say nothing about those around them). Also, do not change an entire chain of command within one year. The loss of historical knowledge will set everyone back.
