    Technology that saves lives

Senior Engineer (Current Employee) Danvers, MA (US)

ProsGreat to see that your work helps in saving lives.
    Not too much politics.
    Friendly people.
    You learn a lot.
    Talented people.

    ConsPriorities change too often.
Main reason for people leaving is they get burnt out from too much work.
    Management is a little disconnected.
    Insurance premium keeps going up.
Annual salary increase is 2% of you meet expectation (hard to keep up with inflation).

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more engineers.
    Connect with employees.
Stop treating every project like an emergency.

Shady business never yields a sunny life

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsNice gadget. Docs love idea. New mousetrap is a good improvement. Dedicated, hardworking field team for most part. Still opportunity to grow biz. Okay place if you accept that you will burn out or get axed, and can do 24/7 lifestyle.

ConsNo diversity in leadership team. No upward mobility on commercial side without GE ties. DOJ investigation, class action lawsuits, failed trial, regulatory headwinds - awful decisions but no one is ever held accountable at exec level. Chronic and ridiculously high turnover. Good colleagues axed. Arrogance. Lots of angry people.

Positive reviews had to be posted by HR or mgmt shills. No one likes working here.

Advice to Senior ManagementFreshen it up, mix up leadership team. Bring in diverse backgrounds with new attitudes and right credentials. Break up the club.

Abiomed is a company you can be proud and passionate to work for. The work at times is intense, but rewarding.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Danvers, MA (US)

ProsKnowing what you do saves lives. Good work for good pay. Most of the management team is understanding and reasonable to work with. Not a lot of politics.

ConsIn some departments, the work load is heavier than others and people are required to work 60-70 hours per week every week. Some of the executive team are micro-managers and haven't learned to trust their teams.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide what you want done and guidelines and then let your teams execute.

Important lifesaving product, but Management rules by FEAR

Engineer (Former Employee) Danvers, MA (US)

ProsFantastic product, critical cardiac care device, easy to explain to other people and it really gets their attention. Looks great on a resume.

    ConsManagement by FEAR.
    High turnover rate.
Unrealistic timelines ,i.e., my project loading was technically over 300%, but this was artificially lowered to look better, realistic loading was closer to 500%.
    No support from management.
Departments are too lean to be able to effectively manufacture or improve the product.
With the management philosophy in place people will stab you in the back so as not to be blamed for any delays or errors.

Advice to Senior ManagementUse realistic timelines, and hire enough people to be able to truly improve the product.

A Great Company that does great work

Executive Assistant (Current Employee) Danvers, MA (US)

ProsThe company and the work we do really makes a difference in the world and peoples' lives
Employees get frequent opportunities to hear the stories of the lives that our devices have saved
They appreciate and recognize those who work hard
The CEO goes out of his way to know the hard working employees personally
The company pushes people to do their best
We have some fun at work

ConsYou don't get the "red-carpet treatment" (perks, incentives, trips, all expense paid annual meetings) unless you are part of the Sales Team
Benefits are not competitive enough (very high deductible)

Advice to Senior ManagementThere need to be more incentives and perks for those who work at the headquarters. At times, it feels as though we're slighted and not appreciated as much as the sales people.

A company filled with smart people who work very hard

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Danvers, MA (US)

Pros- You get to contribute directly to products that save people's lives
    - On the engineering side, there are a lot of smart people.
    - Their products are very innovative

Cons- At Abiomed, the philosophy of assigning work to employees is to assign more work than an employee can handle. You will always feel behind schedule
    - The Salary is not very competitive.

    Meat Grinder

    Employee (Former Employee)

ProsExcellent technology, progressive thinking, does ok with the resources available.

ConsSenior management afraid to interact with direct labor. Change, change, change....very progressive thinking without the infrastructure or headcount to ensure it is done right and is sustainable. SLOW DOWN.

Advice to Senior ManagementCEO needs to be more approachable. People fear him instead of trust him.
