    Pros

Quiet, Hardworking, Friendly environment. Everyone gets along and there's a lot of experts within the office which brings the standard of the entire office up.Within the office there are plenty of opportunities outside of work - a football team, badminton, gym on site (uk office) etc.

    Cons

As an American company it's often difficult in the UK office to interact with teams from different offices, often the atmosphere feels like the company doesn't value the areas outside of their core IC design and ACDS suite.

    Advice to Management

Communicate the key goals of each department rather than just the company as a whole. Engineers tend to be left out of the loop when it comes to matters outside of their department and that often causes problems later on.

  3. Talented Engineers working on interesting (but underfunded) work.

    Pros

Ability to work on all aspects of the product development, from design, implementation through to customer support.
Innovation is encouraged (but not necessarily rewarded or funded).
Really talented engineers work at Altera.
Most of the work done is challenging and intellectually stimulating.

    Cons

    Very conservative culture.
The planning process is long and contrived, and approval seems to be made without proper consideration.
A lot of work is now going to "low cost centers" around the world.
Marketing and Engineering are miles apart, leading to confusion about priority of work.
    Projects are often under-resourced.

    Advice to Management

Allow more fluid movement of people to projects. The required skills need to be matched to the appropriate people.

    Pros

If you are into FPGA technology, it is the place to work. Lots of interesting projects going on if you can get on one of them.

The High Wycombe office has a good social environment to it. Lots of extracurricular activities and a pretty good christmas party.

    Cons

Senior managements flip flopping. For example satellite office communication to main office is poor.

    Advice to Management

Consolidate projects with single offices and give those offices more autonomy.

    Pros

They have a table football table (for the next couple of weeks at least...).

    Cons

Few opportunities as jobs are shipped off to other countries. Very slow moving for new ideas and management is constantly a hindrance to innovation. Training budgets have been drastically cut, it is almost impossible to get yourself booked onto a training course even if it is important for your job. As with most sinking ships the rats are starting to abandon, and unfortunately the good ones seem to be leaving first.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Improve employee morale by taking their opinions into account, and giving feedback about company vision.

    Cons

Big company style, every decision is slowly baked

    Pros

You will not be bored. The technical challenges are unique and always changing. The technology is cutting edge and literally runs the world.

R&D management is very good. This is an engineer's company.

    Cons

Bonus program hasn't worked well for the past few years.

We take on too much, which stretches R&D thin. The products are an enormous team effort, so it requires a lot of collaboration, which in turn requires some top-down goal setting.

    Advice to Management

    Do fewer things better.

    Pros

There are many opportunity for now, since they re-org the whole ICD team.
You can try your luck at here.

    Cons

It is very unstable. All of the team need a long time to stable and difficult to need the demanding schedule.

    Advice to Management

Don't know what to say. Any way need to learn how to manage the new challenge from the new process.node is a key.

    Pros

Altera offers one of the most varied option of careers in the industry. Altera is involved in Hardware R&D on advanced process nodes, Software R&D on high-level synthesis, EDA tools (e.g Quartus), IP design, SoC design, Transceiver design, Driver development and so much more. Altera also has a firm stronghold in the FPGA market (one member of a duopoly), thus there is less pressure on day-to-day survivability of a company, unlike a startup. Altera also has an risk-taking and innovative culture, despite being in a duopoly. Each generation of FPGA brings with it new capabilities that affects customers. Altera invests in R&D and is very willing to bring new ideas to market. Altera is also a very diverse company, with operations in many countries.

    Cons

Altera can sometimes be extremely aggressive and set unrealistic goals, which is unexpected for a company in an entrenched market position. Altera is also still learning it's way on methodologies of larger scale designs on advanced process nodes.

    Advice to Management

Set realistic schedules and follow through with it
