    Nice place to work

    Software Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsQuiet, Hardworking, Friendly environment. Everyone gets along and there's a lot of experts within the office which brings the standard of the entire office up.Within the office there are plenty of opportunities outside of work - a football team, badminton, gym on site (uk office) etc.

ConsAs an American company it's often difficult in the UK office to interact with teams from different offices, often the atmosphere feels like the company doesn't value the areas outside of their core IC design and ACDS suite.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate the key goals of each department rather than just the company as a whole. Engineers tend to be left out of the loop when it comes to matters outside of their department and that often causes problems later on.

Talented Engineers working on interesting (but underfunded) work.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) London, England

ProsAbility to work on all aspects of the product development, from design, implementation through to customer support.
Innovation is encouraged (but not necessarily rewarded or funded).
Really talented engineers work at Altera.
Most of the work done is challenging and intellectually stimulating.

    ConsVery conservative culture.
The planning process is long and contrived, and approval seems to be made without proper consideration.
A lot of work is now going to "low cost centers" around the world.
Marketing and Engineering are miles apart, leading to confusion about priority of work.
    Projects are often under-resourced.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow more fluid movement of people to projects. The required skills need to be matched to the appropriate people.

Probably great at head office, remote offices can be frustrating to work at.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) London, England

ProsIf you are into FPGA technology, it is the place to work. Lots of interesting projects going on if you can get on one of them.

The High Wycombe office has a good social environment to it. Lots of extracurricular activities and a pretty good christmas party.

ConsSenior managements flip flopping. For example satellite office communication to main office is poor.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsolidate projects with single offices and give those offices more autonomy.

    It used to be good.

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) London, England

ProsThey have a table football table (for the next couple of weeks at least...).

ConsFew opportunities as jobs are shipped off to other countries. Very slow moving for new ideas and management is constantly a hindrance to innovation. Training budgets have been drastically cut, it is almost impossible to get yourself booked onto a training course even if it is important for your job. As with most sinking ships the rats are starting to abandon, and unfortunately the good ones seem to be leaving first.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees. Improve employee morale by taking their opinions into account, and giving feedback about company vision.

Altera Penang is a great place to work. Workload can be high in some area.

Information Technology (Current Employee) Bayan Lepas (Malaysia)

ProsGreat teamwork, little or no office politics. Good opportunity for career development. Compensation is good is you are a star performer - you get good RSU & Bonus on top of basic salary.

ConsWorkload can be high in some areas. Compensation is average for most people. Employee with average performance of below do not receive RSU or bonus. Turnover for employee with 5 years or less experience is high perhaps due to compensation.

    Great work/life balance

Advanced Design Engineer (Current Employee) San Jose, CA (US)

ProsThe growth factor is huge for FPGA industry. The work environment is great. The career path is good. You get a great chance at working with something that is new. Pressure is there only when you are close to a deadline. So work/life balance is great. You get a great scope for self development in the field of Digital design.

ConsSometimes due to office politics work slows down. For me personally this has very very rarely happened.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave some great employee "know each other" events so that people can get to know persons from some other teams.

A good, financially sound, mature tech company, in a difficult world

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsVery challenging work, great benefits (Health, vision, dental, others), compensation is fair (I guess, but that's why I'm looking on Glass Door to see how it compares), opportunities for moving around within the company do exist. Work/life balance is pretty good. Campus in San Jose has pretty good perks.

ConsOffice politics (same anywhere), decisions made by committee, slow to react to market shifts, data driven decision making, etc. More recently, political correctness has gotten in the heads of management to the point of being a distraction.
