I have been working at Atkins full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very friendly and social working environment with technically excellent staff producing high quality work. Strong dedication to personal development and good opportunities to experience a variety of projects.

    Cons

Many of the opportunities involve being seconded into the clients organisation which does provide good experience but it is not how I wanted to work as a consultant. More work being delivered as an Atkins project team would be preferred.

I worked at Atkins full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Big company with an impressive portfolio of clients and projects and some genuinely expert specialists.

    Cons

The epitome of a big faceless organisation - poor communications between business units and a terrible internal culture of 'little empires' at middle management level with almost constant infighting and bickering over cost allocations. Atkins were utterly ruthless and emotionless with respect to redundancies, getting rid of staff with 20+ years of continuous service at a whim.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Centralise teams within single business streams - it is ludicrous to have, for example, environmental specialists and geotechnical specialists placed within separate business units. These, together with small localised teams sharing the same disciplines (left over from the days of WS Atkins regional businesses) need to come under a single unit with one management structure.

I have been working at Atkins full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It is just a stepping stone for you to further your career as it has a big name and looks good on your CV. It is a runway for you to take off and that is it. Balance between work life and life is very good though. working hour flexibility is added bonus too.

    Cons

below average salary. lack of possibility for promotions and lots and lots of formality. No future in the company unless you want to stay in the company for 30 years and then something might happen for you to be a director or anything of that sort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1-Work on salary
2-Improve workforce's prospect in terms of jumping onto higher hierarchy
3-Appreciate the skills of your employees

I have been working at Atkins full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Large number of opportunities to move around the business, most areas take an interest in individual development and encourage professional memberships

    Cons

Inter-business collaboration very difficult since every area wants to meet own local targets. Business very risk averse, with processes to match which stifles innovation, despite what is generally claimed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to concentrate on retention of best people, with clear direction and freeing up individuals to work smarter and not constrained by layers of process.

The management consulting practice is a stepping stone for senior engineers - not a consultancy.

I worked at Atkins full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the people - helpful, hard working and driven.

    Cons

Engineering types prevail. Consulting risk evaluated by old school engineers.
At times risk averse to the point of being ineffectual.
Bit of an old boys club in places.
Sometimes middle managers act more like the public sector than the public sector themselves.
Long contracts with bloated organisations result in 'consultants' going native.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you'e serious about consulting - recognise that it's different to building bridges and designing railways. Otherwise let it go.

I have been working at Atkins as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

They give people at the beginning of their careers good opportunities in order to get experience. The people I work with are friendly and helpful. The pay is decent.

    Cons

Policies are often hard to find and quite vague once you have found them - they need to do a better job of making things clearer and putting everything in one place. They could do more to welcome you to the company when you first start - tours, inductions etc.

I have been working at Atkins full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I get a lot of freedom in my role but that's because of my line manager who employs people who work on their own initiative. I'm not sure that this is normal though, although the company does try to foster a culture of innovation.

    Cons

Salary is crap but this about the fifth reason in a list why people take a job. The company is myopic. Innovation is the latest buzzword but innovation is a no-brainer. An innovation drive started two years ago and the company's fortunes have been tailing off for a while. But innovation is something that organisations should be doing all the time. Knee-jerk responses are common

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People need strong leadership and they need to feel valued. At Atkins, people don't feel valued (58% of staff said this in 2013 'engagement' survey). Conversely, people care about the success of the organisation (94%). That's upside down. They tend to implement initiatives too late. There's a brain-drain / flight of knowledge from the organisation because people don't feel valued.
