I have been working at Barclays full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Met some great people on my team and some team leaders are lovely. You get some sort of community spirit in the contact centre.

Benefits and salary are good for the job.

Premier Telephony tends to be quiet for a phone job usually. It is not constant calls like Retail.

Some career opportunities if you try.

Company is trying to change and respect customer service over profit.

    Cons

Targets to promote digital options to 90 year old ladies.

No communication between departments so letters end up getting sent out to customers about something and we do not know about it and sound thick when customers call to query it.

Debit Card Fraud based in India - fraud should always be UK based.

Some important telephony departments closing at 5pm which is unhelpful at 10pm.

Branch telling customers to call when they can deal with an issue.

Too much emphasis on statistics like call times and hold times.

Senior management make decisions that the little people like us on the front line have to deal with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to try and focus on the customer and not profit.

Understand that some people want to ring up or go into branch to do a transfer and hate being badgered to go online.

I have been working at Barclays full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent reputation, secure job, good salary, opportunity to develop and further career.

    Cons

Process improvement, staff cuts mean May branches are under staffed putting more pressure on existing staff. Can be relocated for no apparent reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Recruit more staff!

    Pros

People you work with at your own level.

    Cons

Must sell insurance and account paying fees even if customer clearly don't need it. Otherwise you are down graded and lose pay rise via lower marking AND you are mentioned as a poor performer in front of your colleagues.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go by the Government guidelines. Face the fact and challenge the difficulties, don't just brush poor performers to one side or promote/move

I worked at Barclays full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, not bad remuneration, had lots of opportunities. Strong push internally to embed new values, not just for show

    Cons

Bureaucracy, lack of definition of responsibilities - too many people trying to compete to do the same thing. Move to a 'one Barclays' model making slow progress and moral was very low.
The flat hierarchy and promotion process meant that you could end up taking on much more responsiblity than you are rewarded for and people would work alongside each other with the same role and level of responsibility but different grades

    Pros

    Corporate bank quite interesting work/transactions.

    Cons

Depends on which department you work, not standardised across bank.
Does not have the prestige of the IB.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Barclays full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The talent (in the areas where you can find it) can rival that of the best banks in the City. Those who are engaged are sincere and hard-working, and there is plenty to sink your teeth into if you like a challenge and can see your value-add. Staff are friendly and want to help. CEO has also made a good start with re-emphasising core professional values at every level.

    Cons

Staff who want to help don't know how, leaving a few people carrying a lot of the load. Better investment in resources (salary, training and career development) is needed. Although there are a lot of great ideas, there is seldom enough time given to implement; changing direction is fairly commonplace, leading to constant upheaval and a sense that management is reacting instead of planning. IT systems need better cohesion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Commit to a strategy and hold SENIOR management accountable for its primary deliveries. Significantly adjust compensation structure in critical support areas relative to the rest of the bank (you are insulating the wrong people). Keep the new values in focus.

    Neutral Outlook
