Independence, MO (US)

Current Employee – been working at Baxter full-time for more than 3 years

ProsLarge company that allows/encourages movement.
Opportunity for travel (if you desire).

ConsManagers will tell you that family is important, but that's never the case. I was told that should the FDA show up for an audit (my wife was due to give birth to our first child), I would be expected to come in to manage the audit.

They withhold raises for as long as possible. Performance reviews are a joke.

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport your top performers. Support their families. Stop putting results before people.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Deerfield, IL (US)

Former Employee – worked at Baxter full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI enjoyed the work atmosphere, the people, and the benefits. There are good opportunities for advancement and moving nationally and/or globally if you are willing to work.

ConsAs with many large companies, it is possible to become lost as just another worker. Sometimes moving up is more difficult than it would seem. There are more "hoops" to jump through than you may have in a smaller company. You have to balance what fits for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to Managers and Directors when it comes to promoting people to keep good quality people within the company.

Deerfield, IL (US)

Current Employee – been working at Baxter full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIt is a good place to start a career in the industry. The benefits are good (they used to be better but they are still good). The salaries are great for the area. They are open to training you and have a lot of good in-house training available.

ConsManagement was not transparent with what their goals were. Beware: they slavishly follow the management trend of the month (and then apply it thoughtlessly, incorrectly or where it might not be appropriate). They give a lot of lip service to good job performance, sharing ideas, promoting from within, teamwork, ethics, but those are ignored when inconvenient. Outstanding performance is not rewarded. Whether you have work-life balance depends on whether your manager likes you or not.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is important that one is able to trust management and that employees are able to trust each other.

Current Employee – been working at Baxter full-time for more than 7 years

ProsYou can't beat the benefits. Their heath insurance has a great medical coverage and the company covers most of the expense. The initial salary is usually very good.

ConsThe management does not care about it's employees. The only concern is the budget. You have no opportunity to move up within the company unless you are one of the perfect ones (or have an inside with upper managment). They do not care about how much work you are accomplishing. The only concern is if you submit your time each week, complete training on time and make it appear like you are doing something. If you fail at any one of those (one time), you will not be able to advance in the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to the amount and quality of work your employees do. Reward them for the quality and amount of work they do. Acknowledge their hard work and skills. Don't let one late training dictate if they get a promotion or not. Morale would be much higher if employees felt that their jobs were valuable.

ProsLots of options. Baxter is a big company so there's plenty of opportunities

ConsBig companies have too many bureaucratic policies/procedures.

Advice to Senior ManagementSomeone at a higher pay grade does not necessarily mean that they should have more authority to make decisions against various functions. Baxter needs to eliminate condescending and rude leaders.
