    Pros

Fantastic people who are on the whole truly committed to what they are doing. There is real passion and desire to do the very best on most projects. Great workplace 'perks' such as free barista-style coffees and hot drinks, subsidised cantine and some great social events organised on site, such as free lunches once a month, fancy dress days and discounted cinema/theatre tickets.

    Cons

The company is currently going through a period of huge growth, so is moving from a small biotech to a medium/large biotech and is experiencing all the usual teething problems associated with this- lots of new people and products but without the infrastructure or processes to properly support the growth mean that things can feel a bit chaotic and disorganised. Mentalities and behaviours are slowly changing however, and many of the new people are making great changes and helping to future-proof the organisation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to/use the people you have spent such a long time hiring to get the very best out of them- some people have great ideas but they never come to fruition because they don't get the opportunity to work them through fully.

I worked at Biogen Idec full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Focussed on driving products forward and stretching talent allowing for innovation. Good financial package for new hires, and for old hires, high share price is now reaping dividends.

    Cons

Old hires not financially lifted in line with market when promoted leading to skewed salaries, as well as bias towards higher salaries for males. Company growing rapidly with many new products and hiring of poor leaders who indiscriminantly manage out once settled in order to have a secure seat - they hire in their friends with good remuneration. HR is notoriously poor in UK, to the point of being non-existent - they are just there to support senior management wishes, and thus cannot be trusted by employees. No recognition of results, and no fun at least on UK site due to poor leadership that bends to USA management. Company was GREAT, but no more under current management who are reaping the results sown by older colleagues.

    Good place to work

Former Employee - Senior Scientist in Cambridge, MA (US)
Former Employee - Senior Scientist in Cambridge, MA (US)

    I worked at Biogen Idec

    Pros

There was good alignment from discovery to clinical research, also good internal collaborations. Most staff like working with each other and that helps team work.

    Cons

Therapeutic areas no longer include oncology unfortunately and many of the very experienced senior scientists already left the company due to restructuring or pursuit of other opportunities.

  6.

Biogen Idec is a growing, energetic company with a very nice campus and good benefits.

    Pros

Good benefits, large new campus, fun projects with good potential and a growing company with a lot of energy.

    Cons

Research triangle location is sometimes too far removed from leadership and management in Cambridge.

I have been working at Biogen Idec full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary and benefits are very good. Company has a 3 day work from home policy but that doesn't mean your specific department will allow even one or two days telecommuting. There are also company shuttle buses for people in the suburbs. Lots of success with marketed products. Commuter pass or parking in Kendall Sq is covered by the co and a nice perk.

    Cons

Serious problems in the Clinical Operations department in last few years. Expect to work nights and weekends and don't complain about it; random layoffs occur each year and then those eliminated headcount are completely replaced. Most of us are completely buried in email each day.

Policies/procedures and departments change faster than you can keep up with and promotions go to very few of the most favored. Its all about who you know and if you appear to be buying-in to middle and senior management chaos. Human resources reps care only about supporting Sr Management and may not be that trustworthy. Lots of fear to speak up or raise long-outstanding problems. Departments are constantly re-named and or re-organized so you never know who is doing what.

Its never clear what you have to do to get promoted and its getting more difficult to take a class or attend a conference.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Completely get rid of middle management. Scrutinize GCO issues and fix problems

    Pros

They have great benefits and OK pay for the most part. They have great activities for their employees and cool parties! But most important you get a PAYCHECK..Stock is Great too..

    Cons

You will not be promoted unless you throw people under the bus daily. You are not judge on your ability to work but on how well or IF your supervisor and or manager likes you or not. They have cliques and only those in these will be protected if something happens. Some Managers have no clue about NOTHING that goes on during the day but are quick to discipline people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get REAL managers and stop just filling positions with your buddies. Stop acting like the company is the ONLY company that people can work at. Stand by the Core Values and stop just posting them everywhere in the building.
