I have been working at Biogen Idec full-time

    Pros

The company is profitable, generally well run, with competent management at all levels. It has a clear corporate vision, and hires people that are excellent at their jobs. The company also has considerable focus on the patients who rely on it's products and expends a lot of effort in initiatives to promote their welfare outside of drug development. Vacation time is very generous, and other benefits are excellent.

    Cons

The company has adopted an open office space plan which means that there are no offices or cubicles - just large areas filled with desks and spindled with couches and "huddle" rooms. Everything about that is annoying and productivity sucking. HR talks a lot about focusing on career and personal development, but, in practice, there's rarely opportunities for that or advancement within the company. There are even job levels that can only be obtained by quitting and being hired back at a later date. There are MANY people that have worked at the company for a decade or more with lots of personal recognition, but no promotion. They pay well, but it's not a place to advance your career.

I have been working at Biogen Idec full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefit/salary. Good and motivated people.

    Cons

No recognitions, management only interested to a personal developmen;, not able to deal with conflicts. Unfair work environment. Recognitions are given to bad performers. Extremely demotivating. Always choose for the short term easy solution rather than a long term plan. People should not speak up as it is not well perceived.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give possibilities to good performers to grow and develop, try to keep them motivated. Listen to feedbacks and take proper actions with bad performers.Work enviroment is worsening, take immediate actions before it is too late

I worked at Biogen Idec as a contractor

    Pros

Nice people, helpful people, good friendly environment, good pay, good paid holidays. The health plan is very good. Not a bad place to be in at all.

    Cons

Sometimes there can be hostility among people based on who you are dealing with. Most of them are good though. Senior management sometimes is kind of out of touch with what you are doing. Company is full of people with Indian and Chinese origin and that can cause "clicks" to form.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Diversify the company a lot more.

    Pros

Benefits are pretty good, and the company's future looks bright. If you're lucky, your direct report will shield you from most of the mess from above.

    Cons

If you're looking for quarterly re-orgs, leadership by fear, incessant politicking, a refusal to acknowledge or address incompetence, the Peter Principle in action, and an ostrich-like approach to looming disasters even when presented with proactive solutions -- then run, don't walk, to the Biogen head office (if you can find it, they have trouble deciding where to keep it) and request an application, stat.

I have been working at Biogen Idec as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Management at Biogen Idec truly cares about the success and happiness of their employees. The company has been growing rapidly for some time due to their continued success in the MS drug market. This is a pharma company with a conscience. They are working on several drugs for Hemophilia patients that will not make them any money! There is a great work/life balance at this company and many activities to take part in that are sponsored by Biogen Idec outside of work.

    Cons

You absolutely must have a master's degree to get a full time position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work! You are changing the lives of MS Patients globally!

I worked at Biogen Idec as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great structured company with many different teams and departments. Treats their employees well with stock options, benefits, company parties as well as many other perks. Strong oncology department with hard working people and good leadership.

    Cons

Like many places, politics play a role in the type of projects that are available. Budgeting is determined by the higher ups and may not have the full input of the teams.
