Current Employee - Substation Electrical Engineer III in Overland Park, KS (US)

    Pros

Great professionals, very knowledgeable people, lots of opportunity to engage in multiple roles, semi-ease of transfering between internal business units and within busiiness unit groups. Great culture and value system.

    Cons

Limited room to grow into full manangement positions due to an already top-heavy management. can be difficult to switch between business units or between groups in the same unit. Not as flexible and adaptable to today's working culture expectations in terms of compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more flexible in allowing professionals move around from and between groups, it will allow for a more diverse workforce which increases flexibility and minimizes sudden gaps during normal yearly employee turnovers. Maybe due to being so top heavy, compensation down the food chain is pretty low compared to its peers in the industry.

    Pros

    - Decent work-life balance along with a vast array of training resources that complement your job development.
    - With almost 100 years in the industry, there is a great balance of experienced and newer professionals. Hard work is valued and rewarded.

    Cons

    - Easy to fall between the cracks and become very monotonous if you are not a motivated self-starter. Not the place to be shy - you have to consistently be a positive go-getter if you want to see career progression.

    Cons

Very Corporate, Ultra-conservative, Located in White Suburb

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open a satellite Office in downtown KCMO because Overland park is a terrible place to be stuck as a young professional.

    Pros

Big Company with room to move. YPDP program seems promising, and the future will tell. The company is in many different markets to please what you really are interested in. As an intern you are treated well. They have plenty of people willing to help you when difficulties appear.

    Cons

The hiring process took time, as it does with any large engineering firm. I see many people in the company getting stuck in the position that they are in, and like anything in life experience rules over education. Telecom in general is a tough market to work in.

    Pros

Very friendly office atmosphere. Co-workers and engineers are all willing to help. Got to work on various projects.

    Cons

As an intern, you don't get all the management level details and changes. But I assume that is true for most companies.

    Pros

Fun job with lots of perks. Everyone got along really well and that made everything run smoothly. I really hated to leave.

    Cons

Very ethnically diverse group (good thing) which sometimes make communication difficult. I truly have nothing negative to say about the Ca. office I worked at. However, I understand from former co-workers, that the Overland Park office was stiflingly depressing and the morale was very low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At my old office, no advice. At Overland Park, treat your employees with respect and they will work that much harder. A happy employee is a productive employee.

Former Employee - Renewable Energy Consultant in San Francisco, CA (US)

    Pros

Everyone I worked with was very smart, competent and friendly. The company has good respect for work-life balance. Because many employees stay around for decades, they really care about your well being.

    Cons

It's a big company and sometimes it's bureaucratic. Also, when I worked there you only got 10 days PTO + national holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your younger employees to get a better sense for what they need in terms of compensation and growth opportunities.
