I have been working at Blue Cross (MI) full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I can't say enough about BCBSM. New hires are fully oriented. Benefits are incredibly generous and salary is good. Healthy living is encouraged and rewarded. Healthy food is always available and so are exercise classes and and places to do so. Team spirit is real. There's flex time, parking....

    Cons

Some processes such as performance review seem convoluted, but at least it is established and scheduled.

I have been working at Blue Cross (MI) as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Its a great environment to work, once you get in and do your job right you will remain there for ever, unless the job is outsourced. If your manager is good, can work from home at times.

    Cons

You need to clean your own table space

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not look at other managers team on how they chit chat or how they got work from home approval.

I worked at Blue Cross (MI) full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Company offers very thorough training so you're definitely prepared by the time you get on the floor. Management is pretty helpful when it comes to providing additional resources. The environment is very structured so there's really no surprises.

    Cons

MICROMANAGEMENT AT ITS BEST! If you prefer to work in a fishbowl where you're constantly monitored, then this is the place for you. The environment is very strict and controlled that it can be uncomfortable. You feel more like a disciplined child than a responsible adult. The temp positions has better compensation than perm positions. If you don't know the right people or have a good relationship with management then you can forget about a promotion or moving to a different department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reconsider some of the rules in place. The work environment should feel relaxed and elevating, not strict and uncomfortable.

I have been working at Blue Cross (MI) full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Wonderful people. Great sense of teamwork (at least in my department). Excellent benefits (they're an insurance company. You should expect that!). They are committed to being a part of the rebirth of downtown Detroit, and it creates an exciting work atmosphere.

    Cons

Pays less than industry average for application developers. Change happens at the speed you would expect of a large, multifaceted organization, but to their credit, they are committed to process improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the modernization efforts, especially with process automation. Stay the course in downtown Detroit; you are doing good work in the community and the state!
