Chaotic and you never know what else is going to be thrown on your plate.

Teacher (Former Employee)
Dorchester, MA (US)

I worked at Boston Public Schools full-time for more than a year

ProsPay is better than anywhere else in the state.

ConsIf you don't live in the city, public transportation is not practical, parking is not available, then you will find yourself driving in circles trying to find parking during the winter months.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry one thing at a time, my year working there, 3 different curriculum were tried. Teaching is about ability to takes tests, we all know that, but at least try a program to its end before telling teachers midway to change once again.

It is a great learning experience!

Intern (Current Employee)
Boston, MA (US)

I have been working at Boston Public Schools

ProsI love working here because I get valuable teaching experience while continuing to learn more about effective practices and interventions for struggling students.

ConsSometimes I am asked to complete the "unwanted" tasks of the teachers such as making copies and completing bulletin boards. Although a huge part of teaching, I would prefer to do this before or after the school day, and not during.

Advice to Senior ManagementI love how we are supported by the special ed. coordinator.

Never a dull moment.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe best reason is paid vacation. No other job will give you as much paid time off and vacation time like jobs at a school.

ConsThere is really no growth in this industry or expanding your career. Some faculty members are beyond what you would call rude.

Boston is a good district to work in.

Math Teacher (Current Employee)
Boston, MA (US)

I have been working at Boston Public Schools

ProsThe district is small enough that there is room to experiment with new educational theories. It depends lot on the school but in my case the administration was very supportive of the teachers.

ConsThe current superintendent is not working well with unions and teachers and we are seeing the same tone is elsewhere blaming teachers for all problems and painting teachers as lazy and ineffective.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease try to include teachers in the important decisions. We are sick of learning of your decisions by reading the Boston Globe.

Boston Public Schools Work balance

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Boston Public Schools

ProsUnion plays an important role in keeping management focused on quality of work life for teachers.

ConsBoston public schools is a very political environment - Individuals who may be incompetent are given promotions and recognized as long as they are politically astute..

Advice to Senior ManagementTop down approach to management is not effective in a school system. Management should elicit more input from teachers and parents before making major decisions.

Urban district -- has it's problems, but some good people.

Teacher (Former Employee)
Boston, MA (US)

I worked at Boston Public Schools

ProsIf you find a school where the people share your vision, it can be a great place to really affect kids' lives. They need caring, dedicated, talented people, so there's satisfaction in being there.

ConsAs a large urban district, it's got bureaucracy issues, no doubt about it. That can be very frustrating and makes it harder to get things done.

Advice to Senior ManagementReal steps need to be taken to improve schools, not just complying with federal regulations about making dramatic changes for funds. Evaluate teachers more thoroughly so informed decisions can be made about hiring or firing.
