    Pros

Great pay, if you have a lot of education, such as masters degree
The union fights hard for us
Nurses are in the teachers union
    Summers and holiday weeks off

    Cons

It all depends on the school where you work, and the principal/headmaster you work for. Some schools are mostly pleasant to work in, others are horrible
Dealing with a lot of inner city issues. Poor parenting skills, uneducated parents, unsafe neighborhoods for the kids to grow up, youth violence, etc
Nurses are very isolated, usually one per school, so you have to advocate for yourself and for nursing.

    Advice to Management

New superintendent is starting in a couple of months. He will set the course and direction for the foreseeable future

    Pros

It is rewarding to see students become successful under your watch. The school system has the best salaries in the nation.

    Cons

If dealing with kids is not your thing then you'll have a hard time. I've worked with High School youth for a majority of my career so I had to adjust to working in middle schools.

    Advice to Management

We are leading the nation in public education but there is still a lot more to be done. Keep up the good work and keep arts and sports available to students so that they can express themselves.

    Cons

Leadership and innovation sorely lacking. Equitable support for individual schools sorely lacking. Top down management style.

    Pros

The young folks on the job are full of energy, some come from great homes and neighborhoods, others work daily to improve their homes and neighborhoods.

    Cons

Environment is always changing. There are a ton of resources and people sitting at headquarters, but the real fight is is giving students skills and connections in the private sector to execute those skills.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time in the schools, with the young folks, you will want to get from behind the desk and work with staff and school administrators to change the course our schools have been on.

  8. The experience varies school to school.

    Pros

Benefits are very good, as was the salary structure when I was hired. Boston is a great place to be involved directly in the issues of inner city teaching. Colleagues are usually supportive.

    Cons

Management can be capricious, and the politics and bureaucracy are simply brutal. Students in general have been poorly taught for so long that it's nearly impossible to impart passion to them. The hours are miserable - out-of-class workload is devastating.

    Advice to Management

Opportunities to attend conferences in my content area would have been greatly appreciated.

    Pros

Opportunity to work with amazing youth in need of excellent support. I also loved collaborating with families and the many 3rd part organizations that work with BPS.

    Cons

There is a lot of red tape in BPS especially when it comes to trying to launch new initiatives. This was the most difficult aspect of teaching in BPS for me.

    Pros

If you find a school that has a vision aligned with your beliefs and a strong leadership team, this can be an amazing place to work.
    * High salaries in comparison to other districts
    * Many types of schools to choose from
    * Amazing kids
    * (Interim) Superintendent McDonough has been making some great shifts in the district culture and policies

    Cons

    * Despite higher salaries, you still have to buy supplies for your own classroom if you want new/quality materials
    * Many children have experienced hardship and need more support and less reactive discipline
    * Can be disorganized or ineffective/inefficient communication between the district and schools
    * Some (though it's getting better because of timely evaluations) tenured teachers are not effective
