Lack of Follow Through

Executive Director (Former Employee)
Tampa, FL (US)

I worked at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLoved the residents and the staff.

ConsIrresponsible Regional Management team. Focused more on their own agenda rather than that of the community and assisting community management in providing the best possible experience for the residents and staff. I also have phoned, emailed, and written letters to the regional human resources director, community, human resources director, and regional vice president of operations to get information of an incorrect annual W-2. I have yet to have the privilege of a return call from any of these individuals. Typical Brookdale!

Advice to Senior ManagementGet regional team that understand their position and what it takes to work totally together as a team and not an individual wanting everything done "their way." Also, instruct management in showing respect to associates, as well as ex-associates, when inquiring about a benefit topic. Very frustrating.

very very disappionting

Dining Services Director (Former Employee)
Durham, NC (US)

I worked at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than 3 years

ProsAnyone that works inthe elder care field know the thing we do fro those who at this stage in their life cannot longer do is priceless and thats the reason why we get up everyday and make a difference in their lives

ConsThe false value and commitment by upper management, the shell managing style of company each community is unique, and the inconsistencies with thier policies and procedures in dealing with the staff

Advice to Senior ManagementI worked in the Raleigh Durham area where the whole management needs to be redone, to much favoritism, turning a deaf ear to employees concerns about systems and practices that are not for the benefit of residents, and hiding behind the staff when dissatisfied families express their thoughts about company promise to provide services that they dont monetary support and give needed training and tools to execute upon

Awful company

Human Resources (Former Employee)

I worked at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than 5 years

ProsVery large company - however I would not consider that a pro with this company.

ConsThis company will spend time working behind the scenes to fill leadership positions that aren't vacant and when they hire a new candidate, they fire the person that is currently in the role. There is no job security with this company UNLESS you are in the "good ol' boys club" Also, no matter how much experience you are bringing to the table, your compensation will only reflect what they have budgeted for the position.

Overworked, underpaid, and underemployed.

Clare Bridge Resident Care Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living part-time for less than a year

ProsThe residents really make it all worth it. I do feel a satisfaction in knowing that I am making a meaningful impact on people's day to day lives every time I am there. Also, for the most part, the other RCA's and myself are very team oriented and help each other out.

ConsEspecially given that I work in memory care, our jobs are very demanding. Unless you have been around 30+ people at one time with Alzheimer's or Dementia already, there is really no way to be prepared for what you are going to be dealing with until you start the job. That being said, for what we do, we are way underpaid. We start at $8.00/hr (I make $8.10 for having a year of experience.) There are a lot of demands placed on us by management, residents' families, and the residents themselves. We are frequently asked to come in on days off or to work doubles. Employee burn out is high. There are days when the employees are all quite rude to each other simply because they are stressed out and take it out on another worker, and then that starts a cycle. The training here is terrible. There is no official training for my position apart from being trained on a specific hall by another RCA who has been there longer. If there is more official training, I have not been notified and I have been here just over three months. And there is really no opportunity for advancement. You can eventually be trained to be a Med Passer, for which you make a dollar more, and after a year you can get a small raise.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe aware of how burned out employees get working here. I realize sometimes its hard to find someone to cover a shift, but we can't always handle agreeing to work a double or on a day off when we have already worked 5 days in a row. I would suggest hiring more part-time employees or having people work on-call to limit how much people already working full-time or near to have to cover.

over worked under paid

Cna/Med Tech (Current Employee)
Sun City, CA (US)

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for more than 3 years

Prosthe residents they are the only reason i went to work so at least i knew they were getting the best possible care, i would work doubles come in on days off come in at 2 am because someone called off and end up working 12 hrs with no thanks

Constoo much work not enough help, coworkers hide so they dont have to answer calls lack of communication some employees make their own schedules and others with seniority get the left overs split days off and when you complain they say you have no choice work your schedule i find that is discriminating

Advice to Senior Managementwalk around instead of sitting in your offices all day, talk to the residents they will give you an ear full they dont communicate with employees, they change things add more work and tell us at the last minute appreciate the good employees instead of the ones that refuse to work any extra hours and they get what ever they want the schedule stays the same every week

An in-the-meantime-betweentime, type of company

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Antonio, TX (US)

I have been working at Brookdale Senior Living full-time for less than a year

Pros...not very challenging, something to put on your resume...

Consit's like walking on eggshells... if your not one of "the chosen". Meaning: preferencial treatment is obvious, pay is disproportionate within job types, whispering and backstabbing are prominent and most dissapointing is the lack of genuine concern for the comfort and well-being of those left in their care.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean House! Make regular and unexpected visits to the facilities and have candid conversations with residents and staff. The high turn-over rate in certain departments is something serious to look into.
