Senior Technical Analyst (Current Employee)

I have been working at Cargill full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat experience, great people, the company is so huge there are opportunities for you to work anywhere in the world. It's a privately held company so that is nice. Company is hugely successful.

ConsMaybe a bit of red tape here and there.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have great people working there, use them

Great resume bullet (but don't stay too long)

Experienced Human Resources Professional (Former Employee)
Wayzata, MN (US)

I worked at Cargill full-time for more than 5 years

ProsLarge, diversified global company so if you can get a project or program implemented across a significant part of the behemoth you can probably do it any where in the world. "Minnesota Nice" culture that values maintaining personal brands and relationships--outwardly friendly but watch how you express the espoused corporate value of "candor." Great business to be a trader or senior management team member on a direct drive bonus scheme.

ConsPoor IT systems, poor work processes, and more value on protecting personal "brands" and establishing mutually protective relationships than getting results. The HR function is, ironically, the worst function at developing talent--classic "cobbler's children" scenario.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe new head of HR needs to clean house among the current HR senior leadership team and their direct reports. More emphasis on protecting fiefdoms than working as a global leadership team.

Enjoyed most of my positions

IT Support (Former Employee)

I worked at Cargill full-time for more than 10 years

ProsHuge company with lots of opportunities to change roles/locations. Good pay and 401k & medical contributions. Always reinforcing culture for high ethics and safety.

ConsCore culture use to be aligned with Midwest values - work hard, treat others like family, deliver on promises to other employees. Seen a shift in recent years where too much emphasis is put on people count and the work force is strapped. There has been lots of outsourcing to 3rd parties (which has resulted in less accountability and has taken away the comraderie building atmosphere). People use to start at Cargill and stay for their entire career. Now it seems like a revolving door. High turnover leads to more burden on those employees who have stayed loyal.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake time to have candid discussions with the employees from the bottom up through mid level management. Resolve the continuous nightmare of dealing with IT helpdesk and support techs that are not Cargill employees and do not understand our systems. They have had 6 years to improve and making little progress in closing the gap in customner satisfaction. Reduce the bureaucracy. Boost the use of sharing knowledge as so much energy, time and money is wasted with each BU going out and doing their own thing.

ConsThere is not a career plan shared between employee and employer.
Possibilities to grow, move position or place are very rare.
Environment definitely not dynamic.

Advice to Senior ManagementSee cons, there is a gap that can be improved a lot.

Nice

Communications Manager (Former Employee)
Geneva (Switzerland)

I worked at Cargill full-time for more than a year

ProsReally nice people work at Cargill, for the most part, however it is a very, very large company, so it depends on which division (platform) you work in, and of course your direct manager can make or break the job. As a huge, global company, there is a good range of career paths. You take control over your career path - managers encourage meeting people and developing your network so that your career can blossom. Careers are enabled and supported by senior management and HR if you are committed to the company. As a trader, it's a great training ground.

ConsCertain divisions can be less appealing than others. Cargill is a private company which is good in some ways but they remain afraid to communicate, and in some divisions this extends down to employees which can hinder motivation. Marketing is very underdeveloped as a discipline. Cargill is notoriously cheap - only very senior-level employees are given permission to fly business class and the hotels people are expected to stay in upon arrival are often sub-optimal. Because of the vastness of the company it is difficult to understand.

Cargill (in India) is good only for trading. Dont make the mistake of joining its B2C (consumer packs) business.

Managerial (Former Employee)
New Delhi (India)

I worked at Cargill full-time for more than 3 years

ProsCargill is a trading company. If you are planning to be a trader at Cargill....go ahead. There isnt a better company than Cargill as far as trading is concerned. However, dont make the mistake of joining its B2C business (Consumer Packs division).

Pros:
a. Global Scale
b. Large number of business platforms

Consa. Short sighted policies (sales/marketing). HR non existent!
b. Poor pay master
c. "Babuji" culture
d. Arrogant Sr Management, operating like a one man show
