I worked at Cargill full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people, global best practices in performance management, employee engagement and a strong supportive collegiate atmosphere.
Was let go in an economic downturn and would go back.

    Cons

Low margin business means low salaries compared to industry. Meanness is a way of life. Badge of honour to travel economy and stay in the seediest dives to save money.
Job titles and salaries not indicative of responsibilities and makes it hard to get equivalent job after Cargill 'You can't possibly be good enough to do this job if that's the salary you're on' (Actual comment from a recruiter). 'Managers' routinely manage multi-million dollar budgets on 5 figure salaries whereas in other businesses they would be Directors or VPs and paid accordingly.
Salary increases on promotion rare because of broad banding
Bonuses discretionary and therefore not evenly or necessarily fairly distributed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring compensation and job titles in line with industry standards - your workforce is changing and you won't be able to rely on long service and collegiate goodwill forever, nor will you be able to attract the right talent.

    I worked at Cargill

    Pros

nice environment, good training opportunitites, they care about your development, if you are lucky, you can gen on international assignements. You can move into a very closed commodity trading space, which is difficult to do if you are new to the industry.

    Cons

The company is just too big, which means a lot of things are done slowly or inefficiently. A lot of bureacracy, which starts hitting you at some point in your career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't even know what to say. I think the company is just the same as other behemoths.

I have been working at Cargill full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Down-to-earth culture where the person matters more than the position title, such a diverse business means there is something new to learn all the time and there are opportunities to shift job focus and do something quite different without having to change companies. The people are great and it's a very collaborative culture. There are always opportunities for development if you step up and ask to be involved.

    Cons

It's a big company with a long history and many 20+ year employees. There are some positive aspects to this, but change is slow and sometimes there are too many people happy with the status quo and without enough non-Cargill experience to know how to improve or make things different. Overall behind in technology and creating/following processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep focus on bringing in new perspectives
